Professor of Philosophy, Xavier University, editing at Marginalia, lots of German Idealism. Self-positing since the 70s. All opinions belong to my 'I think.'
Check out my essay on Fichte over at @aeonmag. My first piece of public philosophy. I offer a brief intro to Fichte and highlight some ideas that are, I think, worth developing more today. Many thanks to Nigel (@philosophybites) for his editorial support! aeon.co/essays/on-free…
Everyone in higher ed -- the higher the position the better-- should be asking themselves two questions: 1. Why did Tulsa eliminate a very successful program? 2. Why were such programs rare to begin with?
I wrote about the lack of administrative support for the liberal arts in @nytimes. The standard story we hear is that students don't want it. But a darker reality is that even when it wins big with students and donors it loses with those in power. nytimes.com/2025/07/17/opi…
Once misused penultimate on a date, she pointed it out, still haunts me - my penultimate embarrassment.
Don’t write for fame or money. Write because you agreed to a deadline, forgot the deadline, and just remembered the deadline
Look, I'm not only a specialist in Fichte's "Foundations of Natural Right," I've also published on his "System of Ethics."
Who is a better philosopher, after all, someone who can write and speak in great detail about a niche topic but is pretty much at sea when they venture beyond that, or someone who can speak intelligently across a range of philosophical issues from philosophy of mind and language,…
Saw Ozzy back in the day - Alice in Chains opened. Motörhead was supposed to play but apparently their bus broke down or something. RIP, Ozzy.
They're calling it shrimpgate. Jumboest thing to hit philosophy in years.
This is the kind of poster I want to see on the wall of my doctor or dentist's office.

Getting deep into the agent-neutrality and agent-relative literature. Someone throw me a lifeline before I drown in a sea of articles making ever finer distinctions.
Paper too long. Got to cut. Going for the jugular, I mean, footnotes.
Following the principle of charity, assuming no actual physicist is as dumb as Yap presents this one to be, the physicist must've meant "matter" as in what physical things do, in which case the proposition says we can only know matter (the physical), things mattering. Right? 🤦♂️
One time, a physicist I know dismissed the entire field of philosophy with one simple declaration, and I still love him for it. “If we can’t know, it doesn’t matter.”
At a skating rink with the kids and I haven't heard "It takes two" or "It's Tricky" yet. WTF?
Critical means an examination of the conditions of possibility. Thinking is something you were not doing when you wrote this tweet.
Can you define “critical thinking” please?
Anyone feeling blue today? I can think of a couple that's feeling yellow. That dude's wife is going to bleed him dry. Ok, sorry for posting about Coldplay. Never again.
Close to finishing a paper on Fichte's normative ethics and once I think I've ironed out a wrinkle, I've created another. This is exactly why I refuse to iron clothes. Should probably be more consistent and stop writing papers as well.
Clear example of how police escalate a situation. Peaceful protest of ICE's actions, which results in immediate arrests, guns and tasers out, and the beating of a protester who is held down by multiple police. This is Trump's America.

Been reading the "reification" essay in German and I'm surprised and disappointed by how lose and, at times, misleading the English translation is - never totally off, but not exactly precise.
