John Palliser (Jan 29, 1817 - August 18, 1887) Irish-born geographer & explorer. Born in Comeragh, Waterford, Ireland to Colonel Wray Palliser. Captain in the Waterford artillery. He was also Sheriff of Waterford. His first hunting expedition was in 1847 in the American West.
Visited the grave of John Palliser (1817-1877) today, one of #Ireland's greatest explorers. Famous for his survey of the interior of Canada undertaken for the Royal Geographical Society. Buried on the grounds of a little COI chapel found in the foothills of the #Comeraghs.

A new book with a Waterford connection. It's hard to appreciate how important Gaelic games are to rural Ireland and the sense of community it engenders until you get involved. 😁 Up St. Pat's ⬜🟦
It’s All-Ireland hurling final week. I’ve loved hurling my whole life. But I’d never played it. Until last year, when... I moved to Waterford. I joined my dad’s club, Old Parish. I tried to understand by doing. And I wrote a book. Pre-order it from today linktr.ee/oldparish
English town names tell a lot of history. Anything ending in -caster, -cester or -chester was a Roman fort. -bury and -borough are Saxon forts. If it ends in -by it was settled by vikings (by is still the Swedish and Norwegian word for village.) -ford is a river crossing.
A fun facet of Chinese is that many city names are semantically legible as normal text instead of just as names. Shanghai = On the Sea Beijing = North Capital Shenzhen = Deep Ditch Fuzhou = Happy City Americans are used to names just being names. What the heck is a "York"?
There’s a surge in AI-generated “historical” images online — especially around tragedies. Many are fake, made for clicks, not truth. Before you share, check the source. Is it real history or a bot farm cashing in on emotion? This image is AI generated. 😉
