Tim G. J. Rudner
@timrudner
Assistant Professor & Faculty Fellow at NYU. Robust & transparent ML | Technical AI Governance. Prev: PhD & Rhodes Scholar at University of Oxford.
I will be joining @NYUDataScience as an Assistant Professor & Faculty Fellow! I look forward to continuing my research on probabilistic ML and working closely with @andrewgwils & the NYU community! I'm so grateful to all of my collaborators and my advisors @yaringal & @yeewhye!
Meet incoming CDS Faculty Fellow Tim G. J. Rudner (@timrudner), a DPhil Candidate in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford who will be joining us this fall. Read more about Tim on our blog! #datascience nyudatascience.medium.com/meet-the-fello…
CDS Faculty Fellow @timrudner served as general chair for the 7th Symposium on Advances in Approximate Bayesian Inference, held April alongside ICLR 2025. The symposium explored connections between probabilistic machine learning and AI safety, NLP, RL, and AI for science.
Today, Senator Scott Wiener introduced an amended version of his frontier AI legislation SB 53. Secure AI Project is proud to co-sponsor this important legislation, which follows the recommendations of the California Report on Frontier AI. A thread.
A great opportunity to work on AI governance!
My lab @JohnsHopkins is recruiting research and communications professionals, and AI postdocs to advance our work ensuring that AI is safe and aligned to human well-being worldwide: We're hiring an AI Policy Researcher to conduct in-depth research into the technical and policy…
I am pleased to announce a new version of my RL tutorial. Major update to the LLM chapter (eg DPO, GRPO, thinking), minor updates to the MARL and MBRL chapters and various sections (eg offline RL, DPG, etc). Enjoy! arxiv.org/abs/2412.05265
💡Funding opportunity—share with your AI research networks💡 Internal deployments of frontier AI models are an underexplored source of risk. My program at @CSETGeorgetown just opened a call for research ideas—EOIs due Jun 30. Full details ➡️ cset.georgetown.edu/wp-content/upl… Summary ⬇️
We are too at IFM (@mbzuai + @llm360) in support of our open-LLM (and RL *nudge*) efforts! Looking for all levels of Research Engineering and Science Check out our open roles here: jobs.lever.co/ifm-us
We’re hiring! Vibes so good right now.
We REALLY REALLY need a "Findings" for NeurIPS, ICLR, and ICML. 25,000 submissions at this year's NeurIPS represents extreme excess pressure. It takes valuable time away from legitimate new research. One question is how to administer it. I suggest that Findings go through a…
U of T will be hiring next year. Senior people should reach out in advance.
My largest remaining NSF grant, which was awarded by a competitive process on the recommendation of national experts, was terminated yesterday. The money would have paid for PhD students to invent better AI systems for everyday people who need programs written for them but ...
CDS Faculty Fellow Tim G. J. Rudner (@timrudner) and colleagues at CSET — Emelia Probasco, @hlntnr, and Matthew Burtell — examine responsible AI deployment in military decision-making. Read our post on their policy brief: nyudatascience.medium.com/ai-in-military…
Totally agree with Chris here.
My experience as well. The reviewer chaos at NeurIPS / ICLR / ICML degrades their prestige for the people in-the-know, who are arguably the people you want to impress.
The result in this paper I'm most excited about: We showed that planning in world model latent space allows successful zero-shot generalization to *new* tasks! Project website: latent-planning.github.io Paper: arxiv.org/abs/2502.14819
CDS PhD Vlad Sobal (@vlad_is_ai) and Courant PhD Wancong (Kevin) Zhang show that when good data is scarce, planning beats traditional reinforcement learning. With @kchonyc, @timrudner, and @ylecun. nyudatascience.medium.com/when-good-data…
