Why are other councillors unwilling to fight for poor people in Vancouver? The loss of SRO's means increased homelessness. We can fine developers up to $300k for every unit lost. It costs $500k to build a new one. Council just ate $2.1 Million, money that could build new units.
The SRA by-law conversion fees exist to get badly needed deeply affordable housing replaced. If the city makes a policy of waiving these fees to protect investors who purchase these properties knowing the SRA status of the units, they're encouraging speculation.
