Amidst nationwide crackdown against ‘suspected foreign’ nationals, 100s of Bangla speaking migrant workers detained in Gurugram in what police calls “holding centres.” I and @alishan_jafri report from the ground.
@alishan_jafri @shrutik_sharma
An entire neighbourhood of over 2,000 people is now empty. Bangla speaking Assamese migrants fled to their home state after the crackdown, leaving behind all their belongings in the slum. But all they cares about is the 'kuda' troubling Gurugram’s high-rise residents.
Major media channels are covering this mass exodus of Bangla speaking migrants as a garbage crisis, how residents of Gurgaon’s high rises are being troubled by the unbearable stench, how it can escalate into a health crisis. Not a word on the right of lesser citizens.
@alishan_jafri, @shrutik_sharma✍️ thewirehindi.com/307504/hundred…
@alishan_jafri, @shrutik_sharma✍️ thewirehindi.com/307504/hundred…
Barely a few miles outside the national capital. If it was not for independent media, newspapers would only frame the issue as of a very dirty Gurgaon because workers have gone missing. Like farmers movement was framed as a problem of traffic jams.

1000s of migrant workers are fleeing the city. They are going back to Assam and West Bengal. Police say they are not being detained but just held in “holding centres.” Somehow, “Gurugram city is getting dirty” gets more media attention and public outrage.

Imagine the outrage if these Bangla speaking people were from CR Park, not from a slum in Gurgaon.

Residents claimed that nearly 2,000 people from Assam used to live here. However, when The Wire visited, the colony was almost entirely deserted. Only around 10-12 women were present, who were about to visit their male relatives… With @shrutik_sharma m.thewire.in/article/commun…
