Odd proposal. More US forces to Asia, but placed further away from China and Taiwan? Problem is that also makes it more dangerous to deploy them when the shooting starts. It would not gain the US an “option to stay out”, but it might lose the option to go in. May as well go home.

Over 50 former senior UK diplomats call on @Keir_Starmer to unconditionally recognise a Palestinian state now. Don't wait for a bilateral Israeli-Palestinian process to emerge by itself - it is not going to happen. Instead, kickstart a multilateral push. una.org.uk/letter-prime-m…
In which we discussed how Japan has no alternative to the US alliance, but the US has no alternative either, if it wants to maintain its position in Asia.

This would have moral force if @anwaribrahim voiced the same principles concerning Russia's war on Ukraine. Despite Russian responsibility for killing Malaysians aboard MH17, he has taken relations with Putin in the opposite direction.

Considering the war started 2014, before the Russia hoax, this makes no sense.
True. The Russia hoax didn’t just mislead the US public — it shut down diplomatic dialogue with Russia and helped pave the way for the Ukraine conflict. Let’s see what, if anything, happens next.
The autonomy argument goes both ways. If NZ starts to believe that certain options for enhancing its defence are off the table because they might not go down well in Beijing, then isn’t that equally a loss of autonomy? @HelenClarkNZ @carlworker @DonBrashNZ
