Today is #NECAwarenessDay. Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious intestinal disease that primarily affects preterm infants. NEC is a leading cause of death in our NICU's & is the most common deadly gastrointestinal disease affecting premature and medically fragile infants.

I think the questions are whether (1) we really understand the physiology well enough to micro-manage it, (2) if what we're doing to micro-manage the physiology really has its intended effect, and (3) changing physiology impacts the pathology as we think it does (it is causal?)

Congrats to Robin Ohls (PI) and @NICHD_NIH Neonatal Research Network on this trial of darbepoetin in extremely preterm infants #neoEBM @AABB @ISBTCO While darbepoetin didn’t improve cognitive scores, did ⬇️ need for red cell transfusion by 19% (NNT ~5) and *maybe* less BPD also
