One thing that concerns me about math education at the primary school level is the idea that every math concept, no matter how trivial, needs to be explored for days on end using countless models and manipulatives in order to provide students with a "deep understanding" of these…

I always used to say about 'collaborative learning' that my twins didn't learn how to read or write from each other.
Oh dear! This is going to be troubling if teachers truly started to believe this! Teachers still have to teach "that" what the students are going to think with. Secret word "that" being knowledge.
Quote of the day: I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think. Socrates

I’m 54-years-young today, and my birthday wish is wild: I want every single one of you who is worried about kids’ plummeting reading scores to listen to the TikTok and share this post like it’s the last slice of cake at my party! 🎉 Let’s 'yeet' the reading crisis out of…

Every few years we rediscover that learning is hard work and effortful in the short term. Then we spend the next few years trying to make it fun and effortless again.

If 90% of the behavior issues come from 10% of the classes. Instead of making all teachers/kids spend precious time on an SEL program, how about making sure those teachers have the support they need so every classroom is well-run. Everybody knows "room 15" is wild. Address it

Nobody likes direct instruction. All it does is work.
Direct Instruction gets a lot of hate from progressive educators. Why do you think this is?
Multiple strategies in math is pitched as am inclusive scaffold, when really they are just poor design. The teacher doesn’t have to bring kids to mastery on an efficient strategy. They can just model a few different ways to do stuff and then say, “use the method you like best.”
Very tricky and probably depends on the administrator(s). Bluntly, there's a lot of intellectual insecurity in our field that inspires, "Excuse me, but I'm the expert and you're just a parent" responses. How's your school board?
I very much appreciate this article. My husband & I met with administrators from our child’s school to discuss a math fad they began implementing, and they looked at us like we were aliens when we talked about science based instruction & how this fad did not have evidence.
