I’ve gotten a few images of the tight leaf around the tassel. I’m hopeful that it’ll loosen up and let pollen out without issue. I suggest keeping an eye on these fields to see how much tassel is out, silk length, and pollination success in the next two weeks!
Finds for last week in SE IA: Physoderma Brown Spot, a few pollination ‘misses’ during our recent high heat, tightly wrapped tassels mid week, and finally Preceon (short corn) doing it’s job protecting against high winds Friday night. Have a great week!!
Southern rust is not hard to find in some fields. It favors warm & humid conditions + leaf wetness. Scout your fields. If you decide to spray, double check to make sure the fungicide is effective for rusts (not all are) ➡️ cropprotectionnetwork.org/publications/f… @alisonrISU #ISUCrops
❗️Mark Licht wrote a nice little blog on the wrapped tassel issue some are noticing. At the end of the article, there’s an anonymous questionnaire to learn more about the conditions in which you’re seeing it! #ISUCrops Read the article: crops.extension.iastate.edu/post/are-you-s…

Too early for this post - but SDS, white mold and downy mildew showing up in parts of Iowa. 😬
We are planning a similar test with Iowa waterhemp populations which will be collected this fall. This ranks as one of our top concerns.

This field caught my attention yesterday during my Polk/Boone/Story Co corn disease tour as a clear bacterial leaf streak susceptible variety. I wrote a short article on differentiating it from gray leaf spot! #ISUCrops 🔗go.iastate.edu/DAPMZC

Great Collaboration with @BisonBeanDoc, @datascience_uw, and @CropNetwork to analyze large data to generate a new soybean white Mold ROI tool. It is a tight margin year, this could be handy! Learn more here: badgercropnetwork.com/new-white-mold…
An alert went out earlier this week on the Midwest Pest Alert Network that soybean gall midge has been confirmed in Tama and Poweshiek Counties. Keep an eye out for wilty or dying soybean along field edges! You can sign up for the pest alert network: pestalerts.extension.iastate.edu.
With two new counties confirmed in Iowa, I encourage you to get out and scout for soybean gall midge! If you find them in a county NOT highlighted on the map, reach out to me, @erinwhodgson, or your local ISU field agronomist. Map: soybeangallmidge.org/soybean-gall-m…

Not surprised you are seeing GLS. Risk of gray leaf spot across Iowa has been very high for the past couple of weeks and remains high for the next week according to cropprotectionnetwork.org/crop-disease-f… @corndisease @CropNetwork @badgercropdoc
Finds for last week in SE IA: Gray Leaf Spot is the corn disease front runner, silks are growing (watch for clippers), spider mites stunting beans where rainfall has been average but coarse soils dried out, and a beautiful evening cloud display after some very welcome rain!
➡️It takes about 2-3 weeks after infection for you to see tar spot on the corn plant. ➡️While current weather conditions are low risk for tar spot, hot, humid, and wet is about as good as it gets for gray leaf spot. ➡️Scout fields before you make mgmt decisions!
I've had a few people ask about the Tarspotter app. @CropNetwork is now using the Crop Disease Forecasting Tool online: cropprotectionnetwork.org/crop-disease-f…. The current weather pattern is low risk for tar spot, but I expect we'll see more show up in corn due to good conditions in June.
