Dr in NHS since 1978, now retired. prefers animals to many humans. Sports fan esp. football. Liberal Christian.
Sir Jim Mackey has threatened financial consequences for striking doctors. Commutes 1st class to Newcastle. Stays at the Lansdowne club when in London. Seen sleeping on the train by the Daily Mail earlier this year. Yet begrudges resident doctors £23 an hour.
Hundreds to thousands of UK-trained doctors will be unemployed in a matter of weeks as their contracts end this August. Why are we training doctors to leave them jobless? My thanks to @Telegraph for helping me raise this issue. telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness…
What a ridiculous waste!!!

Could it possibly be that some of the generous people making these donations might actually want something in return? Surely not!
As a GP, I am not allowed to receive a pen or post-it note pad from a pharmaceutical company rep Govt banned them in case I was influenced to prescribe medications This should also be banned Influence being bought in Govt Patients should influence not the healthy & wealthy
I have been saying this for the last 2 years…. No one was listening… telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness…
Despite the Leng review outlining how limited PAs are, NHS still funds the courses and bursaries that are costing the taxpayer £21m/yr, with more courses set to go ahead next year. Also £8m of taxpayer money has gone to GMC to regulate assistants 5/ x.com/mike88881221/s…
🚨 NEW: FOI response shows @NHSEngland has spent £62 million on training Physician Associates and Anaesthesia Associates over the last three years. £54.3m on PAs. £8m on AAs. 💰 They’re also directly funding salaries for PA and AA 'ambassadors' - £275k and counting
So we’re talking hundreds of millions of taxpayer £/yr on a role that is already paid 31% more than what Streeting is willing to pay a much more qualified doctor, who can do a lot more for patients and has to support the PA 6/
Now, he threatens to withhold locums for doctors, which results in more locum money being spent on non-medically qualified substitutes. He threatens to not expand Drs training spaces, which just means the UK taxpayer won’t have future specialists 7/
Addendum: As there is the inevitable “But you had a 28.9% pay rise over the last three years” response In 2022, an F1 was paid ~£14.50ph. An F1 in the 2025 offer is paid £18.67ph. This is a rise of ~£4ph/3yrs (or ~£1.40ph/yr). It’s a tiny increase, but 4.17/14.5=0.288 28.9%
So it’s up to you, the public, to be informed, and be aware of who is lying to you, and how they’re using your money, and where it will lead. You will need doctors for safe healthcare. But this govt is intent on shortchanging you. 10/10
Doctors have had enough. Of being taken for granted. Of being exploited. Of being vilified. This anger isn’t going go away because public want to buy the lies and tell doctors we’re not worth £22ph, still less than assistants 9/
It isn’t that doctors are greedy, it’s that Streeting is upset they’re not fools. Just like the fools he expects the UK public to be when he stokes anger against doctors while misspending taxpayer money on roles with limited value 8/
How did they find the money to pay for the development of PAs when they were not required and patients were at risk? @wesstreeting
U.K.taxpayers need to be aware of vast sums of money spent by govt on training & excessive salaries of PAs to inappropriately use as dr substitutes, despite fact that they need supervision by drs to keep patients safe & cost effectiveness of PA role in U.K. has never been proved!

We should talk about money and value, and what @wesstreeting and @DHSCgovuk value and spend money on. Last week, the @lengreview found that PAs (medically unqualified assistants to doctors, with no unique skillset) function at a level below F1 (newly qualified) doctors 1/
As an accountant, Sir Jim Mackey knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. Especially resident doctors. Poxy bean counter 🤬 @DrHWazir
Imagine if there was as much media coverage of the £169 million in profit made by 5 eye companies delivering NHS care in a *single year* as there is about worker strikes.
‘Likely diagnosis x,y,z’ is no different from undifferentiated.
ED cons putting a “likely xyz diagnosis” on patients at triage so they are no longer undifferentiated so PAs can continue as they were. Appalling. @RCollEM do you endorse this workaround?
No comment No video No playing to the crowd What is it about the Afghan situation that two people who worked for the Home Office don't feel happy to comment on - they usually comment even when they know nothing
the public need to be made more aware that PAs with 2yrs superficial ‘medical training’ &who need supervision for patient safety are being paid more than qualified drs. There are less GPs to consult because govt financially incentivises practices to employ PAs rather than a GP.
I agree, plus an FY1 doctor is paid considerably less than their Physician Associate support worker.
How is it offensive for a doctor to ask to be paid 22.67£/hr? Less than their assistants? The public purse is being rinsed by paying billions to management consultants and other vanity projects, not because of doctors.
