“The de Blasio story serves as an illustration of the significant, and wildly undemocratic, power that cops and their unions have over the elected mayors that they supposedly serve.” (cf, Schrader, Blue Power, 2026)
This is the best argument I've seen for Zohran dumping NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. From @ghostrunnerblog open.substack.com/pub/ghostrunne…
Shoutout to the Fanon scholar who put me through a disciplinary hearing about my anger on Palestine in the morning and went on to teach his Fanon class in which I was enrolled in the afternoon. May God bless you on Fanon’s 100th birthday.
I’m now hearing that the administration is proposing reducing the division to eight departments and also toying with the idea of eliminating and outsourcing language instruction. A rumor is also going around that doctoral admissions will be cancelled for next year.
Not entirely sure what’s happening at Chicago yet, but it’s happening fast and largely in secret—I’ve heard the provost has ordered the dean to consolidate depts in the humanities div with fewer than 15 TT faculty. Could be the end of some very important depts and PhD programs
CONFIRMED: Arturo Suárez, the musician imprisoned by the Trump admin without due process in El Salvador for 4 months is FREE. He told his brother that while they were imprisoned, they were beaten daily by guards in CECOT. This is the first ever large release from CECOT.
Another man renditioned to El Salvador by the Trump admin has been identified as Arturo Suárez, a Venezuelan musician who first entered the US at a port of entry (not illegally). He has no criminal record here or in ANY country — but like Neri Alvarado and others, he has tattoos.

“US control over the Panama Canal [has] a robust history in the neocon playbook, but it’s still a rather deep cut.... I certainly did not foresee the canal’s sovereignty reemerging as a geopolitical issue in 2025.” —an interview with @MiriamPensack go.nybooks.com/3IxLezC

🚨NEW. A horror story emerges from hacked flight logs of the March 15 flight to El Salvador to be imprisoned without trial: mass disappearances. The data reveals DOZENS of people on the flight whose names were never disclosed before. All may still be locked up there today.
Today @Cristosal announces that it is ceasing operations in El Salvador due to the climate of repression and intimidation imposed by the Bukele regime, which has now definitively crossed the rubicon into dictatorship. reuters.com/world/americas… @WOLA_org
Two big wins for Slovenia today
⚡️#BREAKING Slovenia imposed sanctions on ministers Ben Gabir and Smotrich and declared them persona non grata due to statements "that encourage genocide" Why is this important: This is the first country in the European Union that imposes sanctions on Ben Gabir and Smotrich
I was pleased to review @tonykcheng's illuminating & excellent book The Policing Machine in the American Journal of Sociology. The book shows how the NYPD marshals particular forms of community input to manufacture support and resist reform. journals.uchicago.edu/doi/epdf/10.10…
Trump is losing ground on immigration in every single poll. The majority of Americans look at the masked agents grabbing day laborers and landscapers and shoving them into vans and recoil in horror.
Amazing. New CNN poll has Trump's approval on immigration absolutely tanking. It's down to 42-58. A 19-point net swing against him on this issue in just the last few months. Curious what those who say we're in midst of societal backlash to 1965 immigration law think of this
“‘Jair Bolsonaro couldn’t care less about Brazil. He’s a phoney patriot,’ the conservative Estado de São Paulo newspaper fumed… [They] instructed conservatives to pick their side: ‘Brazil’s or Bolsonaro’s. The two paths are diametrically opposed.’” theguardian.com/world/2025/jul…
“The rampage unleashed by Netanyahu’s government has been good for business… [But] the current stock market rally…involves a sudden and rather convulsive doubling-down on high-risk strategies of preemption and novel forms of violence.” –@adam_tooze adamtooze.substack.com/p/chartbook-39…
When the man who just got more primary votes than any Democrat nominee ever — who's running against three evenly split goofball opponents — isn't deferential the way you'd hoped, isn't that mostly your problem?
🚨Update on Letterheadgate: @ShaiDavidai DM’d me Sunday accusing me of “baseless accusations,” gave me his attorney’s info (who’d supposedly confirm the letter’s authenticity), and floated a conspiratorial theory to explain the typo in the @Columbia letterhead of the document he…
Hey @ShaiDavidai, I’ve been trying to get ahold of you to confirm the authenticity of the letter you published. Did the @Columbia Office of Institutional Equity send this to you with its own name misspelled in the header?
