This March memo suggests stopping all new enrollments in the NFIP. That would grind the real estate market in Florida to a near halt. No flood insurance means no mortgage in flood zones
SCOOP by @Zhirji28 w/@laurenthal & me In a newly revealed March memo, titled "Abolishing FEMA," officials proposed ways to dramatically curtail the US government’s disaster response role. Also the memo proposed four possible new names for FEMA, which inlcuded the National…
“Taking a sledgehammer to OAR would shatter decades of progress in hurricane forecasting, one of the roaring success stories of predictive sciences. The fate of the agency’s research arm is now in the hands of Congress.”
It's been death by a million papercuts to U.S. weather forecasts by the Trump administration, but Friday's detailed 2026 budget feels like a deathblow. In today's @nytimes I ask: How far can we degrade our hurricane forecasting before people end up dead? nytimes.com/2025/05/31/opi…
Incredible, crushing, heart-wrenching writing from @FreshParsley. Every tragedy is so much more intense than any of us could ever know, unless we lived through it. texasmonthly.com/news-politics/…
NEW: The calls from Alligator Alcatraz’s first detainees brought distressing news: Toilets that didn’t flush. Temperatures went from freezing to sweltering. A hospitalization. And little or no access to showers, much less confidential calls w/ attorneys. miamiherald.com/news/local/imm…
Gov. DeSantis signs Senate Bill 180, which could have crushing effects for local government decision-making power over development, environment & other issues.
Unfortunately, yesterday, without the usual photo ops and fanfare, the Governor signed the destructive #SB180 into law. What was otherwise a very solid bill to manage post-storm emergencies was hijacked as a trojan horse to carry this terrible language pushed by a single…
Breaking: Canadian man awaiting deportation dies at detention facility in downtown Miami miamiherald.com/news/local/imm…
Governor says the detention facility “will have zero impact on the Everglades.”
Tonight, I joined Laura Ingraham to discuss Florida's Alligator Alcatraz facility, which will be a force multiplier to stage criminal illegal aliens for federal deportation.
Agents used a foster kid as bait to locate the child's parents. It's one example of how the Trump administration’s deportation campaign is encircling vulnerable children and squeezing the agencies tasked with caring for them. w/ @anaceballos_ @syraob miamiherald.com/news/politics-…
How @GovRonDeSantis used his emergency orders on immigration during the Biden admin to seize Miami-Dade govt land over the weekend for a deportation detainment camp in the Everglades. @anaceballos_ @syraob @harrisalexc miamiherald.com/news/local/imm…
Fascinating story from @annamphillips about the clash between government buyouts vs small towns that can’t afford to let people go. Makes me wonder what that will look like in some rural, riverfront Florida communities. Or maybe even the Keys one day? washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…
Florida child welfare authorities turned over a 17-year-old foster child to ICE agents, sparking intense criticism that the action could hinder efforts to protect children in the state’s large immigrant communities. @anaceballos_ @syraob miamiherald.com/news/politics-…
The DeSantis administration is refusing to turn over public records about Hope Florida and now threatening reporters who are trying to know more about it.
We have heard that @jeffschweers with the @orlandosentinel is calling foster families in Florida and threatening or coercing them to say things about Hope Florida. This is unacceptable. The Hope Florida Foundation supported foster families with donations from non-taxpayer funded…
Seven of the cited sources in the MAHA report don’t appear to exist at all. “The paper cited is not a real paper that I or my colleagues were involved with,” Keyes told NOTUS via email. New on @NOTUSreports from @emilyykennard and @MargaretManto notus.org/health-science…
Well, that's gonna be a problem this year. The Legislature doesn't have a budget or a tax package yet so there's no hurricane preparedness tax holiday, at least so far. The original one was supposed to run May 15-31.
Friendly reminder to take advantage of the Hurricane tax relief holidays in Florida. (Tarps, Ropes, Chainsaws, Gas cans, Generators, flashlights and batteries)
