I'm excited about our new book, pulling together the threads of what great schools do & celebrating them. We've explored curriculum, learning, behaviour, attendance, personal development & leadership. I'm forever indebted to all schools I've visited/ worked with. Link in comment
The government’s priority should be helping the many pupils who are behind with their reading – and we know exactly how to do it, writes @FFTEdu’s Mike Fischer tes.com/magazine/analy…
This
It was fine apart from the hoop jumping nature of the task, the pain of catching absent students up to their 8 hours, the marking and the moderating… And the suspicion that doing your job properly was the fastest way to guarantee results worse than other schools.
Another waste of time, non evidence based technique @rlrossi64 @greeborunner and Bloom 🫣
Other myths that linger far too long: – Ofsted need triple marking – Pupils must respond in green pen – Every lesson needs a plenary – Displays must be “child-led” – You can’t stream or group by attainment Most of it? Leadership folklore, not statutory...
So many replies here saying it is because Ofsted want them. No, it's because senior leaders do/ did.
There’s a phantom, totally fictitious pseudo Ofsted handbook haunting the minds of many senior leaders that they are totally resistant to having debunked. Even by real Ofsted. LOs, intent statements, marking are three key chapters in this phantom handbook. Read the real one!
Are we ‘dumbing down’ teaching? Sam Gibbs argues that if we want critically engaged young people, then we need to divert from our current path and put intellectualism at the heart of our profession tes.com/magazine/teach…
Of course the mind is not a computer, no one seriously thinks it is! New post on why the Computational Theory of Mind is misunderstood and why it continues to be relevant Link in reply
Challenge is important for many reasons
***New Substack*** This last year saw quite a lot of change for me. New house, new area of the country, new job. I have much to be thankful for though and one of these things is how much I am still learning. Post in comment

The one virtue of education’s continued love of fads and fashions is that it creates natural experiments. The fact that many don’t feel any urgency to adopt the findings is as alarming as the persisting idea that choose your own adventure is somehow ok. the74million.org/article/cognit…
🌍 'Despite the proclamations of various futurologists, disruptors and hucksters, we don’t know what the future will hold' The geography curriculum must remain flexible, says @EnserMark schoolsweek.co.uk/geography-need…
The final caution, about chasing hares, is essential. Teachers are too often diverted by initiatives that look like rigour but lack clarity, purpose or evidential grounding. Curriculum thinking should stretch teachers, but toward meaningful coherence, not performative complexity.
***New Sub Thingy*** The importance of challenge. It is something I relish and I hope that some will be happy to offer it. Post in comments

Hi X 👋🏻 Is there anyone out there who a) knows how to write basic C++ scripts and b) interested in joining a research project looking at behaviour/attention in the classroom? ~2 of work in total. You would be a coauthor on paper. Please do get in touch!
UPDATE: Unite has confirmed it did not accept the offer, and said it will support workplaces or groups of members to ballot for action schoolsweek.co.uk/3-2-pay-rise-f…

If it were as simple as tick or cross based on one set of data everyone could go home. It's not and when data like this was over emphasised it led to some pretty grim distortions
