My JMP “Representation from Below” is first view @apsrjournal - doi.org/10.1017/S00030… - I show causally that women’s grassroots party activism links descriptive representation —> women’s political participation in India (& other democracy + development outcomes) 🧵(1/n)

Thank you @QJEHarvard for helping this paper get out there! So excited to have research (born of my own angst as a female parent) out there in the world.

Universities often serve as "anchor institutions" that deeply affect the character of their communities. In a new paper, we (@MikeJAndrews44 / Lauren Russell) ask how (and when) the establishment of a college influences local political and civic life. 🧵 osf.io/preprints/soca…
The debate on SIR has shifted from principles to ground reality. Here lies a danger. The real threat of SIR is not just farce and fraud in Bihar but quiet rewriting of the architecture of Indian citizenship. For 75 years, our Republic followed the logic of encompassment —…
When I got tenure, I decided to use it start a new research agenda, studying US science in the 20th century, how it became dominant, what held it back, and what we can do better. Here's the first pub (with Scott Kim).
Analyzing scientists' biographies during the baby boom, we find that mothers have a unique life cycle pattern of productivity. Children reduce the productivity of mothers but not fathers, with important implications for promotions and participation. econometricsociety.org/publications/e…
I've officially ended my job search! While I'm not publicly disclosing the position until I start, I wanted to share some reflections in case they're helpful to prospective PhD applicants and current grad students. Ideally, I would have preferred a research-intensive role, but…
An economist in Sweden just got a hold of the data from a quarter of a billion online chess games held on @chesscom to test a classic question: Does winning one game make you more likely to win the next? In other words: do “hot hands” or “psychological momentum” exist in…
Neural networks (e.g., LLMs) make often imperfect predictions, introducing biases into analyses that rely on them. Common empirical economics scenarios fall outside the existing literature on debiasing “black-box AI”. Our paper (with @J_S_Carlson) on robust and efficient…
A wonderful article by Naseeruddin Shah. I entirely subscribe to his views. We were, fortunately, insulated from bigotry. I find the same wonderful ethos in my interaction with most Army colleagues. There will always be some who are different because of the anonymity of WhatsApp
New paper with @adam_m_auerbach in JDS. Exploration of how cities expand outwards--it's often a citizen-led phenomenon, where people just buy up agricultural land and build on it. Can create problems for getting access to services, but citizens are also creative problem-solvers!

This new working paper argues that female economics PhD students benefit tremendously from having female economics faculty around. How do they back up this claim? They look at the timing of sabbatical leaves. When female professors go on leave, it decreases third-year female…

My book was just sent to press! It'll be available in print end of July. Focusing mostly on Southeast Asia during the 20th c, the book develops an argument about how state-building can present headwinds for nation-building.
BREAKING: MIT just completed the first brain scan study of ChatGPT users & the results are terrifying. Turns out, AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt. Here's what 4 months of data revealed: (hint: we've been measuring productivity all wrong)
What an important piece of research!

Even Bhutan voted in the favour of the UNGA resolution from which India abstained. Forget Global South, you are unable to even get your closest partner in South Asia along. That's the reality of India's waning influence.
