I am not against a review of MPs' pensions, Stephen, but it would need to bear in mind that for good democratic reasons the average shelf life of an MP is between a third and a half that of a doctor.
The NHS Pension Scheme is a single scheme for all NHS employees. It is not specific to doctors. It is a good scheme but it is less generous than the MPs Pension scheme. The MPs pension scheme is also exempt from pension taxation such as annual allowance / lifetime allowance.
Their pensions are too high -- which is why many doctors retire early -- and their starting salaries too low. Obvious solution frontload the salaries and reduce the pension? Oh, but I am guessing the BMA will resit that, too.
