Doing my best to connect energy researchers with opportunities today. I cannot promise super fast responses but feel free to fill this out: forms.gle/KDoKz3u1Pd41ru… (usually I send this to PhD students and postdocs, but opening it up more broadly given the circumstances)
Mike has been a really wonderful leader. Supportive, curious, and a true believer in the important mission of the national labs. I feel so lucky to have spent so much of my career at LBNL with him at the helm.
Lab Director Mike Witherell will retire in June 2026. Witherell has led the Lab through a historic period of scientific achievement and recognized operational excellence, with a deep commitment to developing the next generation of scientists. More ⬇️ newscenter.lbl.gov/2025/07/23/ber…
In light of news that they might get their budget cut, I just want to share how absolutely amazing the CSB’s investigations and videos for the public are. I used them for teaching. It always made me proud that our government supports stuff like this: youtube.com/@uscsb?si=lXTw…
This panel discussion on the bioeconomy was really fun. I never miss a chance for @jbei @CABBIbio get-together 😁 Thanks for inviting me! cabbi.bio/recap-of-sri-c…
🎉 Congratulations to our Lab's Jay Keasling, @ENERGY's @OTCatDOE and @AcadofInventors Innovator of the Year! Details ⬇️ newscenter.lbl.gov/2025/06/25/jay…
I am taking a red-eye after which I will go straight to do some public speaking at a rather large conference. AMA..specifically ask me wtf I was thinking.
In bioprocesses, not all sugars are created equal. Hosts preferentially consume glucose and that has CAPEX implications. If you can bump the glucose-to-xylose ratio up by 3.5X, your biomass feedstock's value can increase by >$77/ton. New @jbei preprint: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
Needed a laugh today and this one delivered. La source, c'est moi.
What is my source for that claim? I am my source. Before you get all high and mighty, let’s take a look at your self-citations.
If engineers designed these robes, they would have pockets. Just saying.

Some engineers, an economist, and a software developer walk into a bar....

The Open Molecules 2025 dataset is out! With >100M gold-standard ωB97M-V/def2-TZVPD calcs of biomolecules, electrolytes, metal complexes, and small molecules, OMol is by far the largest, most diverse, and highest quality molecular DFT dataset for training MLIPs ever made 1/N
Confession: I cringe when people include slides in their presentation prefaced with "I asked AI to visualize [xyz] and this is what it came up with". Unless there's some reason why it is interesting. No judgement. Just not for me.
