Interesting, isn't it, that under a markedly undemocratic system, a Prime Minister (Peel) responded to public opinion by repealing the Corn Laws in a way that a system with universal suffrage etc has not over one of the biggest issues of the current age (immigration)
“The Hitler of Mein Kampf is the outcast, the misfit, the creep. It is often said that he preached an ideology of strength, of might-makes-right, and he did; but Mein Kampf is as much about weakness and victimhood as it is about strength.” @si_rubinstein

Glad I’ve given up on North London dinner parties.
With 200,000 people signing up to join the Corbyn/Sultana party in less than 24h; with the independent MPs; and with the Green MPs and councillors, a joint nomination –– a "Labour & Co-operative Party" for the 21st century –– will be an absolutely unstoppable force. Get it done.
This is very good.
Britain has replaced free markets with an incoherent system of judicially enforceable rights and statutory obligations. My latest for @TheCriticMag thecritic.co.uk/the-british-ec…
The age profile of Oasis fans in London today suggests that the @wigmore_hall, @glyndebourne and the @ROH_London are rather youthful outlets by comparison.
Iván Chirivella was the man who gave flight training to Mohamed Atta, the lead death pilot on 9/11, and Marwan al-Shehhi, who smashed the plane into the other Tower. Chirivella was the pilot on the Spanish plane that evicted 50 French Jewish children. thejc.com/news/world/pil…
Don’t trust politicians -or anyone - who doesn’t grow up.
It’s been 25 years since I went to watch Oasis at Reading festival… They’ve still got it 👏
Imposter syndrome: for a reason. Should be nowhere near high office.
'Something just fell off my shoulders. There was this sense that I'm the right guy in the right job at the right time.' @DavidLammy opens up to James O'Brien about having imposter syndrome at every stage of his life, until he became Foreign Secretary.

Caught up with this episode today. A tour de force from @_paullay on the Civil Wars/Wars of the Three Kingdoms. And for those of us who are admirers of Edward Hyde, there is recognition of and praise for his wisdom in guiding Charles II's approach to the Restoration.

Looks like he’s applying for a job there, given his tired tech bro get up.

Terrifying.
The burden that the USSR bore was ultimately unsustainable, but for many years, they were able to make a decent fist of hiding it. Is Great Britain so very different? asks @baylissbaghdad thecritic.co.uk/the-british-ec…

Politics meets Smash Hits, without irony. Alas, despite good intentions, votes for 16-year-olds is a very bad idea. Too young, too easy to manipulate (just look at the rest of us) and too new. We must protect our democracy, or debase it.
We promised it. We're delivering it. Like we said we would.
