I’m delighted to join @TomMcTague at the @NewStatesman as his deputy - exciting times ahead pressgazette.co.uk/the-wire/media…
I have a new book coming out soon and I’ve written for @NewStatesman about why Labour’s survival will depend on whether they can soothe our raging housing crisis… That’s why ministers are gearing up for more radical second year… newstatesman.com/politics/2025/…
NEW: Zarah Sultana told a meeting of “Trade Unionists for a new party” last night the new left party should be aiming to win “20-25%” of the vote at the next election. But rumours have emerged that she has already been sidelined from leadership with Corbyn taking the reins solo.
Our LondonCentric piece this morn shows how Asif Aziz’s company repeatedly rents some of the UK’s priciest retail spaces to students who vanish without paying millions in tax. There’s so much money for HMRC in the WestEnd if it just enforces compliance. open.substack.com/pub/londoncent…
Tongue in cheek suggestion from @willydunn that pensioners should receive an summer cooling allowance. But having polled the idea over the weekend we found a majority would back it with just 1 in 5 opposed. Young people being the most supportive of a pensioner cooling allowance.

Britain stands at a revolutionary moment. For too long politics has failed those it was meant to serve. A year ago we came together to change that. Today we set out a bold vision to rebuild the economy and restore the democratic contract with the British people. 1/

Powerful words from Lord Sumption on what’s happening in Gaza. He accuses Israel of committing war crimes. Full interview available on the free @TimesRadio catch up service for 7 days. Around 35 mins into my Sunday show
“Do you think Israel is committing war crimes?” “Yes, I do. I think it's absolutely plain that they are.” Despite Israel’s right to self-defence after Oct 7, its response is ‘entirely disproportionate’ and violates international law, says Lord Sumption. @AyeshaHazarika

I went to a cattle market to speak to some farmers. Like so many others in this country, they’re pissed off and planning to vote for Reform newstatesman.com/politics/uk-po…
I spoke to the New Statesman about the dawn of the post-literate society. Books are rapidly being replaced by addictive screen slop. In my view it is the most significant cultural and political and disaster of our time youtube.com/watch?v=hAVsoj…
In June 2022, Lee Hsien Yang and his wife Fern received an early police knock at their Singapore apartment. They flew to London and claimed asylum. Why had the son of Lee Kuan Yew fled his own country? They tell their full story here, for the first time thetimes.com/world/asia/art…
This is imperative. Morally.

People are *literally* dying in hot houses
Why not a 'it's Spring so buy the grandkids some Easter Eggs' payment? Or a 'buy yourself some extra ovaltine as it's still chilly in February' payment? Or even a 'Go on, treat yourself for no particular reason' payment to be paid randomly in the year?
The replies to this are a good demonstration of how many people on Twitter respond immediately to a headline without reading the article
