News Flash! I'm delighted to announce I'll be doing a talk on the Battle at Norton St Philip on 27 June 1685... opps 2025. I'll be explaining the importance of the Battle at its part in shaping World History! #MonmouthRebellion @Helionbooks #FightingforLiberty1685 #OneKing1685

#OTD 25 July 1654, Charles II, the Princess Royal & almost certainly Lucy, are in the Belgium resort town of Spa. I've been confirming the 17th Century route from Paris to Cologne, cross checking the dates & places. Next stop Aachan. Devil is in the detail. #SecretQueen

Today's #17Century print to add to my collection. Absolutely amazing and big! This is why I #Love17thC
For any Monmouth & Argyll Rebellion of 1685 Wargamers, I've created an old school FB group. We're thinking hosting a wargamers weekend for the anniversary in July 2026 near the battlefield. Depending on interest... #OneKing1685 #FightingforLiberty1685 facebook.com/groups/3039003…
#OTD 1685 'Brought to the Scaffold on Tower hill... about 10'Clock. Ketch struck 5 blows, after 1st blow Monmouth turned his head a little & looked up, & after the 2nd or 3rd blow spoke a word or two, when Ketch seemed to intermit or lay down the Axe...' witness Print on my wall

Hear ye! 'Tis time for Stuart Saturday! It's been a week since @StuartHistFest. A week?! It was AMAZING to spend the weekend with people who share a passion for the Stuart period. I've even met a few people who have inspired me! Our theme is: what fascinates you and/or…
#StuartSaturday! Always been fascinated with history from an early age, particularly with old buildings, but I think it was #SamuelPepys’s diary that kicked it off for me!📚Years later I was fortunate to have permission to hold his 1660 diary, all in the Pepys Library, Cambridge.
I think what made me love the Stuart era was the emotional bond of re-enacting it. What fascinates me is the people of the time, their world view, beliefs, values, way of life, etc. It was also the first era with near-photographic art capturing the everyday making it feel real.
A fascination for Charles II, Louis XIV and courtesans led naturally to Louise de Keroualle among other beauties for #StuartSaturday Portrait of Louise de Keroualle, Duchess of Portsmouth Peter Lely ca. 1671–1674 / Getty Museum
It was Jan III Sobieski who got me into 17th century and Maria Clementina into #StuartSaturday. Now I appreciate Polish gods of war and want to get into the movie business with my idea of an epic 17th-century tv-drama. S1 1646-48 is when Sobieski met Stuarts, then he went to war.
#OTD 340 years ago, the Duke of Monmouth's army was defeated in the fields between Chedzoy and Westonzoyland, called Sedgemoor. Read the full story on my blog: warwalks.com/mon.../battle-… Image from my books #OneKing1685 and #FightingforLiberty1685 from @Helionbooks

🗓️ #OnThisDay in 1685, the Monmouth Rebellion ended in defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor. ⚔️🔥 Discover why this was no 'pitchfork rebellion' with @Warwalks in Series 4. 🎧 Listen now: pod.fo/e/14f056 #otd #onthisdate #history #podcast #stuart
#otd 5 July 1652, the French Royal Army under the Vicomte de Turenne attacks Paris. After initial success they are defeated outside the Bastille by the rebels under the command of Mademoiselle de Montpensier. Inside the city is Lucy Walter the #SecretQueen #ScienceofArms

#CharlesII sailed between palaces, rushed into battle & travelled Europe, all before his 30th birthday. He was loved & hated. Friends betrayed him, he betrayed family & danger surrounded him. Age 0–30, his life saw grandeur, intimacy, adventure & conspiracy. #CharlesIICradle
#OTD 340 years ago, Monmouth advances to Axminster narrowly avoiding encirclement by the Militia. After a skirmish his forces secure the town. On hearing this news Lord Churchill complains to the King of the poor performance of the Militia. #FightingforLiberty1685 #OneKing1685

#otd 340 years ago was the skirmish at Bridport. The outcome was indecisive; Monmouth's new recruits achieved their objective. This dispels the myth that Monmouth had an army armed with pitchforks but soldiers with the latest weapons. #FightingforLiberty1685 #StuartSaturday

340 years ago, Whitehall receives news that Monmouth has landed. The Army is mobilised & an advance force is ordered to Salisbury, under Lord Churchill. This image made me realise everything I knew about Lord Churchill was fiction! Why? #FightingforLiberty1685 #OneKing1685
