#CharlesII sailed between palaces, rushed into battle & travelled Europe, all before his 30th birthday. He was loved & hated. Friends betrayed him, he betrayed family & danger surrounded him. Age 0–30, his life saw grandeur, intimacy, adventure & conspiracy. #CharlesIICradle
Frances Cromwell, daughter of a certain #OliverCromwell If some people had got their way, she'd also have become wife to #CharlesII in the mid-1650s. Picture it. Ollie & Charlie working together as father-in-law & son-in-law in London. Would it have worked? #history #whatif

Lovely feedback from a listener today regarding Episode 32 - The Siege or Gloucester. It was recorded live at The Gloucester History Festival last year, with John Eeles and Philip Moss. "Just listened to the Gloucester episode & I love the fact the guys are still rightly proud…
Long before the crown, Charles II was just trying to survive war, exile, and chaos this is the real story of how he became the king everyone remembers.

I think that more importantly, Monmouth did not have the contacts in England, or on the continent and he definitely did not have the implied legitimacy of William and Mary. He wound not have been accepted my most of the English population or by the Church or the Lords
#OTD 1685 'Brought to the Scaffold on Tower hill... about 10'Clock. Ketch struck 5 blows, after 1st blow Monmouth turned his head a little & looked up, & after the 2nd or 3rd blow spoke a word or two, when Ketch seemed to intermit or lay down the Axe...' witness Print on my wall
I can't stop laughing at the comment that this portrait makes Charles look like Mr Bean. If only #RowanAtkinson had played #CharlesII – though not in the #MrBean style! 🤣 #comedy #comedyheroes

I think what made me love the Stuart era was the emotional bond of re-enacting it. What fascinates me is the people of the time, their world view, beliefs, values, way of life, etc. It was also the first era with near-photographic art capturing the everyday making it feel real.
#StuartSaturday! Always been fascinated with history from an early age, particularly with old buildings, but I think it was #SamuelPepys’s diary that kicked it off for me!📚Years later I was fortunate to have permission to hold his 1660 diary, all in the Pepys Library, Cambridge.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a pen to use for signing books? Are marker pens really best? Someone has kindly mentioned Sharpie pens, so that's good, but I'm like Wavy Mavis here.
