U of Utah Department of Neurobiology
@UUNeurobiology
Investigating development, synapses, circuits and behavior in health and disease using molecular genetics, imaging and advanced neurotechnologies.
It's official! We are thrilled to share that@iaahmed123 Ismail Ahmed will join us as faculty on 09/01. He will launch his program developing novel chemical tools to determine how neuropeptide signaling modulates behavior and physiology in the context of health and disease.

We are thrilled and proud that @JasonSynaptic will be recognized with this award and receive support from the @McKnightFdn for this exciting work!
Honored to receive the @McKnightFdn Neurobiology of Brain Disorders Award! This funding will allow us to continue exploring mechanisms of tau secretion and propagation in Alzheimer’s disease. Also excited to join this network of outstanding scientists! mcknight.org/news-ideas/202…
It was fantastic to gather for our first faculty mini-retreat and discuss our plans for the future of @UUNeurobiology. We were so fortunate to have @iaahmed123 there with us and can't wait until he officially starts in September.
Thrilled to be here and be a part of it all! The present and future of @UUNeurobiology is so exciting!
A kind news report about some of our work on the "Algorithms As Drugs" revolution for cancer care. This year we have multiple clinical trials in the works. buff.ly/3Y2AVsT
Wow!! Congratulations to @Jess_Osterhout for this fantastic recognition and support from @klingensteinorg ! We are thrilled to have her as a colleague and can't wait to see where this exciting work will lead her.
Congratulations Jessica Osterhout, Ph.D., recipient of a Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship in Neuroscience for the project “Why does sickness hurt?” @SimonsFdn @Jess_Osterhout
Wonderful recognition for a talented graduate student @DonzelleTaylor and her amazing mentor @moriel_z !! Congratulations!
Congratulations to Donzelle Taylor and @moriel_z @UUNeurobiology, a graduate student-mentee pair who were awarded a prestigious HHMI Gilliam Fellowship recognizing outstanding research and a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion in science @HHMINEWS hhmi.org/news/hhmi-name…
We are thrilled and proud that @DonzelleTaylor has been selected as an HHMI Gilliam Fellow! Congratulations to Donzelle and her fantastic mentor @moriel_z for this well-deserved recognition!!
Congratulations to Donzelle Taylor and Moriel Zelikowsky on being named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Gilliam Fellows! @UUNeurobiology
WIth pictures!
We are excited to share that Jason Shepherd @JasonSynaptic and Chris Gregg @GreggNeuroLab have been promoted to Professor in @UUNeurobiology ! Congratulations to both on this well deserved recognition. We are so fortunate to have them as colleagues!

Congratulations to @jamesgheys1 @ErinBigus @Hyunwoo_Lee5223 from @UUNeurobiology!!
Clock-like 🕰️ firing of medial entorhinal cortex (MEC) time cells is modulated by learning, allowing the tracking of various temporal structures that emerge through experience @jamesgheys1 @ErinBigus @Hyunwoo_Lee5223 @UofUNeurology @Uutah @UofUHealth nature.com/articles/s4159…
Excited to finally announce that Kaelan Sullivan in the lab (who I still can't convince to join X 😅) has been awarded a @NINDSDiversity F99/K00 DSPAN award! Stoked for him and very well deserved.
Congratulations to @jamesgheys1 and co-first authors @ErinBigus and @Hyunwoo_Lee5233 on their publication in Nature Neuroscience!! This exciting work provides critical insight into how the brain learns and encodes the temporal structure of experiences. Cool!
I am thrilled to announce that the first paper from my lab has been published! 🎉 Check it out here: nature.com/articles/s4159… Huge congratulations to the incredibly talented team, led by co-first authors @ErinBigus and @Hyunwoo_Lee5223! 1/N
Congratulations to @RutterLab @KevinGHicks @UofUBiochem and @JasonSynaptic @UUNeurobiology on their @ChanZuckerberg awards! Exciting and provocative research. Two New CZI Awards Power Studies of Metabolism and Intergenerational Memory uofuhealth.utah.edu/news/2024/03/t… ✏️@SophiaFriesen2
Dr. Gary Schoenwolf truly is a terrific scientist, educator and mentor as well as a distinguished editor and author. His legacy is remarkable. We are proud to have him as Emeritus faculty and as a colleague.
Many people are very good scientists, or are excellent teachers, but rare is the individual who excels at both. This month we say farewell and thank you to Dr Gary Schoenwolf and reflect upon his career, and contributions to Developmental Dynamics. doi.org/10.1002/dvdy.6…
Congratulations to the Link lab! Cool @DMM_Journal cover!
Our cover is out! Thanks @DMM_Journal !
A remarkable story from @GreggNeuroLab , one of our own @UUNeurobiology faculty. He is a pioneer and so committed to patients and finding new approaches to cancer treatment, all while doing incredible neuroscience and genetics research. Chris is an inspiration.

In a rare but serious complication of cancer, the body’s own immune system can start attacking the brain, causing rapid-onset memory loss & cognitive deficits. New research from @JunjieXu15 @StaceyLClardy and @JasonSynaptic sheds light on the cause bit.ly/3ucBgNf
Congratulations to @JunjieXu15 and @JasonSynaptic lab, as well as @UofUNeurology and other collaborators. What an exciting story! @UofUHealth @UUtah
Research by @JasonSynaptic @UUNeurobiology @UofUHealth in @CellCellPress shows some tumors make a virus-like protein that triggers autoimmunity that attacks the brain, explaining why cancer triggers memory loss in rare cases. Way cool! ✏️@SophiaFriesen2 healthcare.utah.edu/newsroom/news/…
Fergil - It it great to have you here and wonderful to see you building your team and setting up your lab. Welcome!
We are thrilled to announce that @fergilmills will be joining @UUNeurobiology as an Assistant Professor next year! His lab will be focused on uncovering fundamental circuits underlying learned and innate motivated behaviors. Welcome Fergil!
Congratulations KC on the fantastic recognition and support for your work!
Big congratulations to @brennan_kc for earning an @NIH Javits #Neuroscience Investigator Award! In his project "Noncanonical Glutamate Signaling in the Origins of the #Migraine Attack," he studies the role of glutamate plumes as indicators of #headache. #ResearchInnovation
