Cognitive neuroscientist trying to understand the neural encoding of abstract representations and their effects on perception · PI · Husband · Father of three.
I won an ERC starting grant! The project will investigate the neural mechanisms of attentive vision, using multi-photon imaging in macaque monkeys, and in particular the encoding of mental models in PFC & the effects on perception in V4. See for more info: neuroscience.vision

Today is amazing grad student Paul LaFosse's last lab meeting. Here's cool data he showed: Paul used 2p holographic optogenetics (laser stim) to select and stimulate this neuron in a working brain. This ability to change neural activity is key to understanding. (hey @ch402)
Great PhD opportunity at Donders in the Netherlands 😊
We have a very exciting 4-year PhD position available at the @DondersInst, to better understand how neuronal populations generate magnetic fields and how we can measure those intracranially, with Corette Wierenga and @GauteEinevoll. See for more info : neuronanotech.eu/phd-projects/i…
Very happy that this work is now published in eLife! We find that humans are unique in the way they encode pairs of stimuli, in the context of symbol-object relations. If you've learned that A->B, you spontaneously generalize it to B->A! The full story : elifesciences.org/articles/87380
How can we define symbols, and are humans unique in their ability to learn symbolic representations? In a recent study, we investigated this, using fMRI to directly compare how humans and macaque monkeys encode associations between stimuli biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Excited to uncover the mechanistic basis of feedback-driven computations in the cortex, inspired by connectomic and functional data supported by an ERC Consolidator Grant #ERCCoG. Thank you for the support @ERC_Research
Congrats to five of our researchers, including Simon Jacob and Julijana Gjorgijeva, who receive prestigious ERC Consolidator Grants by @ERC_Research. Also, Alin Albu-Schäffer is awarded a Proof of Concept Grant: go.tum.de/573222 👏 #ERCCoG #ERCGrants 📷A.Eckert
I have written a letter published in @Nature discussing disparities in the ERC's parental leave policies for fathers across Europe. We must address these issues to promote equality in research careers: nature.com/articles/d4158…
Can you see the square in yellow? What about the circle, in blue lines? But how does that work? Researchers will use the recently awarded @NWONieuws to bring the only European 3-photon microscope 🔬 suitable for macaques, to the Netherlands: 👉 ru.nl/en/donders-ins…
If you're interested in the mechanisms of top-down attention - at the level of inter-areal interactions, feedforward/feedback pathways, cortical layers and cell-types - check out our new study finally out in @Neuron cell.com/neuron/fulltex… 1/n
New perspective in @NatRevPsych: human intelligence is a matter of scale of information processing, not genetic changes to one domain. Implications for AI, evolution, and development. - with @CantlonLab rdcu.be/dDoBt
