🚨BREAKING: Almost 1 in 5 people claiming Universal Credit and disability benefits have used a food bank in the last month. Hunger and hardship are already at record levels, and social security cuts risk pushing even more people to food banks.

❗ Say it louder for the people in the back: you can't budget when you have no money. We speak to parents who are skipping meals to feed the kids and people who are terrified about rising bills. No amount of budgeting will make incomes stretch to cover the cost of essentials.

Although Westminster has made a commitment to build more social homes, this is not helping the record numbers of people trapped in temporary accommodation right now. The Govt must restore housing benefit this autumn to cover the true cost of renting. crisis.org.uk/about-us/crisi…
Food banks provide so much more than just food. 💚 They also provide advice on money matters, offer a listening ear, and make a decent cup of tea. This extra support is a lifeline and reduces the chances of someone needing to turn to a food bank again.

Over 7 million low-income households were going without essentials in the 6 months to May 🚨 This number has been at least 7 million since Oct 2022. The Govt must boost living standards so that low-income families can finally feel some reprieve. jrf.org.uk/cost-of-living….
Too many parents are worrying about whether they can afford food for their children and themselves. This isn't right. But there is a solution. We need a social security system that provides just that – security. 💚

PSA: Growing up in a family that can't afford the essentials can have life-long impacts. It can impact your chances of performing well in school, finding well-paid work, and supporting your own family in the future.

❗ Millions are already facing hunger and hardship. Rising food prices will only add more pressure to families who are struggling to put food on the table. This isn't right. Everyone should be able to afford the essentials they need to survive and live with dignity 💚

Hunger is not a food problem, it is an income problem- it’s not bad budgeting - people simply do not have enough to cover their essentials and this is unconscionable! ‘No respite for consumer' as food prices remain 'stubbornly high in NI’. bbc.com/news/articles/…
Bad news for families struggling to afford essentials: millions already face hunger & hardship. Rising food & fuel prices ramp up pressure on families and the food banks & charities trying to support them. Bad news for government too: stagflation very difficult to tackle.

Something’s not right when 1 in 5 people receiving Universal Credit and disability support have needed a food bank in the last month… Our social security system should provide just that - security. 💚
We seem to be entering a dark period. Disabled people always faced prejudice, but it's so dangerous when public figures fuel it, amp up suspicion & the idea disabled people are either faking or burdens. Compassion & justice are our core values, we need to stay true to them. 1/2
We applaud the power of disabled people, food banks, and people like you who have used your voices to stand up for disabled people. The remaining cuts to disability support are very concerning. But you helped make huge improvements to the Welfare Bill. 💚

‼️The UK government has pushed through huge cuts to Universal Credit for disabled people applying in the future. Our Policy Manager @ayaz_manji explains what you need to know ⤵️
