Everyone knows service cuts are coming to RIPTA as its leadership looks to navigate a $10 million budget shortfall, but just how deeply remains under wraps until the agency’s board of directors meets Thursday afternoon. rhodeislandcurrent.com/2025/07/23/rip…

The Rhode Island DOT removed a portion of I-195 from Providence in 2011. This was a massive win for the community. The work didn’t end there, though. South Water Street, which had functioned as a highway ramp, was still very dangerous.
Its two wide, straight lanes of one-way traffic made it an ideal environment for drag racing. Providence officials addressed this by converting one of the lanes into an urban trail. After the reconfiguration, crashes dropped to almost zero.
Local advocates are working to ensure the design stays as safe as possible. Even if it ends up being temporary, the reconfiguration of South Water Street remains a good example of incremental improvement. buff.ly/NeRhuQ5
