3 1/2 yrs ago, Virginia proposed to have all kids in the same math class until 11th grade. This school year, the new accountability system will make it very difficult for a school to not offer Algebra to middle schoolers. Proud to have spent months advocating for it to happen🥹

In education, keeping things simple is a struggle. An army of interests idolize complexity and turn a beautiful profession into a web of paperwork, nuance, and ideolody. Add on, add on, add on can't be the strategy.

I'm old enough to remember Hooked on Phonics in the age of Whole Language. And now we have Kumon, et al in the 30+ yr era of Whole Math. When public schools don't provide essential instruction, the private market will provide it to the exclusion of the least advantaged.

Excellent article @C_Hendrick! The same could be written today about major math ed orgs and ed schools that dismiss the importance of and strong empirical evidence for memorizing math facts. They’re from the same ed philosophy as whole language too.
