The government's impact analysis on capping inheritance tax reliefs for farmers and rural businesses claims it will not have any "significant macroeconomic impacts". We know this isn't true - it is is already inflicting damage on the economy and will cost the government more…
I’m reposting a lot of these comments on this post, but this one is especially poignant The refined tax change is abhorrent Shame shame shame @Mather_Keir
James Mee @HMRCgovuk You are obviously very proud of your award would you like to show it to the grieving families of farmers who taken their lives over this or are declining chemotherapy to hasten their demise ahead of next April? I can introduce you @loosecollie @agricontract
EXC: HMRC Hands Internal ‘Expert of the Year’ Award to Designer of Disastrous Farm Tax order-order.com/2025/07/23/exc…
So this is the guy responsible for the end of the family farm the family business the possible suicides of farmers and he gets a prize! This government and their advisers are disgusting!
The remarkable thing is that 9 months of protests, lobbying, expert evidence, select committee reports & media coverage hasn’t even made it so far as to raise an element of self-awareness at Treasury. Deeply troubling that any dept can be so utterly insulated from reality.
This does seem extraordinary. An analysis that has been widely criticised by economists can win you “expert of the year”. Resulting in a policy that has already caused some business owners to take their own lives and countless months of worry for others. Well done James.

This👇 Disgraceful Talk about rubbing your noses in it @Mather_Keir And a workable alternative- to both raise revenue AND prevent family business has been put forward yet flatly ignored. Support our economy, don’t wreck it @hmtreasury @UKLabour
Stop the uk I want to get off Country side and family business in tatters MPs loosing seats Farmers taking there lives And some one wins a award 😡 @loosecollie @wheat_daddy @TWBFarms @FarmersWeekly @JeremyClarkson @FarmersGuardian
Eejit👇
Treasury goblin celebrates his 'win'; a policy that is driving farming families into penury and even suicide. Telling that HMRC views this as a real victory; as we know they advised several Chancellors to screw over family farms, only Reeves was cruel and stupid enough to say yes
All farmers know this is nonsense, but the word salad is intended to fox the general voter. This government is presiding over the smallest ever budget for food, farming & environment, while other policies - esp IHT - will cripple its ability to turn a profit.
'This government is supporting farmers with more investment' 'You broke a pledge to them!' Katherine Forster asks Steve Reed about what the NFU has called farmers' 'torment with worry' due to government policy.
“The Labour government's proposed inheritance tax proposals threaten to shatter generations of farming families and undermine Britain’s food security, the NFU has warned.” farminguk.com/news/inheritan…
It ought to be illegal for a government minister to conflate to mislead. And how many times - it’s the biggest number but with inflation a much smaller budget!
'”This government is supporting farmers with more investment”. ~ Steve Reed. This is absolute nonsense.
Omitting the impact on mental health and family cohesiveness from the Treasury’s assessment of this policy is a critical failure in the legislative process. Ignoring those aspects when the risks have been repeatedly stressed by professionals, industry bodies and politicians…
A stunning claim from the Treasury’s Family Farm Tax impact assessment. They say it will have “no significant impact” on family life. Have the treasury spoken to a single farmer? It is already causing a huge amount of stress and anxiety amongst our hardworking farming families

This @UKLabour @Keir_Starmer @RachelReevesMP @Mather_Keir Absolutely, this 👇
Would Govt. prefer us to sell the workshop, yard, offices, stock or staff room to pay the ludicrous BPR IHT if my mum dies? 45 years of unimaginable graft, risk, sacrifice (& paying taxes) - but then shafted simply because we run a good family business & provide good stable jobs.
A busy rural business- today on the farm -2x engineer (one rep, one instal) -2x plumbers rep. in holiday let’s -2x scientists -samples for exp in soil -gardener in holiday let’s -wagon collecting osr -sample collection/ seed deliv’ &your bread👇 #ruraleconomy @Mather_Keir

By these metrics this is the worst gov of my lifetime. The vindictive #FamilyFarmTax along with Compulsory Purchase orders makes this feel like a modernised (more professional sounding) Zim style land grab - I’ve family that bear the scars. They can’t believe UK is allowing this
Too many don’t get the risks involved in producing food- here and globally. It’s one of the reasons farmers are so vocal in trying to get that message across. The risks and the returns don’t generate to cover an IHT reform which will undermine our farmers and our rural economy
On the exact day it was ready to harvest, 30mm of rain fell on this Milling Wheat. More than had fallen since early March when it actually wanted rain. Unbelievable. A Rollercoaster of Anxiety that very few will understand.
🗣️ 'Backbench rural Labour MPs are frustrated their govt hasn't released its costings analysis of our alternative, clawback proposal. Meanwhile, Chancellor Rachel Reeves still refuses to meet us." @NFUtweets president Tom Bradshaw, with #inheritancetax update at #RoyalWelshShow
And in the light of @UKLabour showing no willingness to take this on board these stark truths hit hard @Mather_Keir
“Farming is now a capital-intensive, highly skilled vocation entailing constant innovation, long hours, volatile pricing and endless bureaucracy. This is not a business for the faint-hearted. There are no profits to harvest.” moneyweek.com/economy/uk-eco…
Exactly this! Why do more when your IHT threshold is breached? It’s completely eroding ambition in the UK👇
A thread 🧵 for @RachelReeves and @Keir_Starmer We are a family farm in Mid Suffolk, growing combinable crops and producing free range eggs. Back during the last Labour government we were struggling to make decent margins, so we explored alternative income streams and diversify
