YIMBY, effective altruist, rabbit lover, and probably the most chaotic engineer you’ve met
Waiting for the bus on Capitol Hill: > A passing driver rolls down their window Driver: “excuse me sir, is this a safe neighborhood?” Me: “yes?” Driver: “I used to work at DC General Hospital, 40 years ago. Back then they would EAT people like you” > drives off
A lot of conservatives seem to be under the impression that PEPFAR was briefly paused by mistake and will be back to normal soon. But no. The administration has repeatedly tried to destroy PEPFAR and Congress keeps telling them to stop and then they try again.
I feel like people don't realize just how hard Parfit went regarding our obligations to donate in volume 3 of On What Matters

i think lots of criticisms of effective altruism suffer from bad empirics about what the actual behavior of people who identify as effective altruists is
Not nothing. Many people who received AIDS drugs via PEPFAR have probably died. More people will die because of the cuts to GAVI. But it previously cost so little to save these lives that letting these people die won’t generate enough savings to show up on the graph.
For all the headlines, nothing changed.
there’s an effective vaccine for Lyme Disease that was pulled from the market after antivaxxers went nuts and sued over the standard baseless claims. on a saner timeline, nobody lives in fear of ticks anymore.
12 miles from Manhattan is the Wrigley Park section of Paterson, where several new new market-rate 1-bedrooms go for as little as $1,670 per month. It's an epicenter of naturally affordable market-rate infill development.

Here’s the tally for currently-active missions that will be shut down: >Mars Odyssey >MAVEN >New Horizons >Osiris-APEX (plans to flyby another asteroid) >DSCOVR Unflown but planned missions that will die include: >VERITAS (Venus orbiter) >DAVINCI+ (Venus atmospheric probe)
>New NASA budget shuts down the Juno mission …why?
I bet this shit hits so hard if you're a constructivist
Most people disagreeing with the implications of a moral theory is in fact totally fatal for that moral theory! It's the exact equivalent of a physical theory being falsified by experiment.
I am honestly amazed by how horrible this bill is. it simultaneously: 1) explodes the federal deficit 2)cuts taxes for millionaires 3) decimates Medicaid and rural hospitals 4) destroys American energy production it’s literally the worst bill of all time
This bill will create a 500 Gigawatt shortage of electricity and increase prices.
There’s no realistic scenario where the benefits (above the line) expire in 4 years or the pay fors (below line) are enacted in future. It's wrong to say this is a $3 tln tax cut for the wealthy paid in part by cutting benefits. In reality, it's just $6+ tln of unfunded tax cuts.
wait why the fuck are Republicans trying to steal the Smithsonian's space shuttle
