With Stanier abroad in India & Coleman left to his own devices, idle minds looked to other lines for inspiration. Impressed by the Collett 7200s, plans for a 2-8-4T carrying the 8F's Type 3C boiler arose for short haul heavy mineral runs with aims to eliminate tender-first runs.
- incorporation of portas gas producing combustion system - lempor ejectors concealed in conventional chimney outlines - roller bearings in place of conventional axle boxes - reduced coal capacity in favor of larger water tanks - incorporation of ETCS for Henry James + Gordon
So, who's ready to theorize what modern improvements would the Sodor steam engines have? :)
Here we are then, a week after the start of the end. Emotions still haven't processed fully but boy, wasn't that something special indeed? The drone caused a stir, but here's all the lovely people from above just after the photo.
What a pleasure to have been a part of this, both as The Guard and with some VFX work. There's nothing like a tight deadline, as we only filmed this about a month ago - across the 15th and 16th June.
TONIGHT at 6pm BST - The classic story from 'Four Little Engines' as you've NEVER seen it before! 'Sir Handel' presented in LIVE ACTION with narration by the Rev. W. Awdry himself, filmed at the Talyllyn Railway - where it all really happened. youtube.com/watch?v=3Z0hAb…
The dilapidated brake still showing signs of GWR lettering, J. M. Chamney/ photographs W&LLR 823 shunting at Welshpool among cattle vans in June 1954. Unlike the brass plates which were carried by the GWR's standard gauge fleet, the W&LLR's 0-6-0Ts wore cast iron numberplates.

Potential hot take: I prefer both Gerry and Albert as ‘gone’ in The Railway Series. Gives greater impact at how MSR’s legacy is carried by the three Skarloey-inhabiting survivors. Duke, Peter Sam, and Sir Handel merely provided Talyllyn and Dolgoch acting advice.
Either cosplayed or y'all need to put your Awdryvision glasses on lol #AwdryEx #AwdryExtravaganza #AwdryEx5 #Awdryvision
People hearing Max and Tim joking around to make sure the livestreams are entertaining and reverse-engineering literal breadcrumbs so they can shout CANON for Twitter likes:
This was all a tiny bit bonkers. But every single face was wearing a smile - and that was down to the fantastic effort put in by @TalyllynRailway staff and an army of volunteers who made this weekend's Awdry gala such a success. Huge thanks and well done everybody!
🖤Then VS Now💜 I’m all teary eyed🥲 📸 @nattles124 #AwdryEx5
With a patchjob almost comically slapdash, D3 62000 is shot by John Clarke looking a bit shabby sporting apple green at Grantham Shed in 1950. A wartime fluke & presumably not welcomed by Thompson for its extravagance, there'd been talk of naming it which ultimately went nowhere.
Hope everybody who was able to attend #AwdryExtravaganza5 had a great time! 💙✨
