And now finally out the fascinating work of @MervTravers about the immediate effect of the words on pain perception on AT. Love it! sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
@MervTravers fantastic presentation on how words impact pain perception. #achilles #tendon
Thanks @Physio_lab. No doubt, people are told some very unhelpful things. This is the first evidence, that I know of, where the information delivered by a clinician during the first consult had a direct effect on pain. We really need to think about our words!
Such great work from @MervTravers . Would be interesting to repeat this on the sedentary folk with AT. In our service evaluation we recorded the language used in reports when people had imaging. Quite inflammatory. No wonder why people are often fearful to move.
Really happy to finally have this experiment published….. Diagnostic information can have an immediate effect on pain….. this should inform our clinical interactions. Spoiler alert: not only were the participants blinded, but they didn’t know the experiment was happening!
Yes, I see definite upside in choosing a narrative that emphasises reversibility rather than pathology. Longer term effect is the logical next step in this line of research.
Thanks for your interest in the study. The intention is by no means intended to be good for business. We wanted to know if clinician-delivered information affects pain. This hadn’t been shown before despite all the messaging regarding nocebic language. Now we know. It is a thing!
Thanks for highlighting our work. We think this experiment really matters. We now have data that shows information from a clinician on the first visit has an immediate effect on pain! That knowledge should shape our clinical interactions.
Fascinating new research from @MervTravers and colleagues suggests that how we describe an injury can have a direct impact on a patient’s pain: 🔗 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Exciting milestone to reach 107 randomisations on DIDACT - halfway to the 214 total 🥳📈 thanks to all sites who have contributed so far! Please keep screening your daily fracture lists & keep an eye out for any distal clavicles coming through EDs @YorkTrialsUnit @hpsinghjk1

What ankle position do you most frequently test in? (post a comment if different or you use multi positions and expand why)
How many of you are using Isometric plantarflexor testing in your area of work?
