.@NYCMayor refused to answer any questions earlier today about the claims of unsafe conditions at 26 Federal Plaza where some migrants are being held by ICE. .@NYIC put out videos on Tuesday morning showing over crowding and migrants sleeping on the floor.
When I went to enter one courtroom, and found its door was locked, another DHS employee interrogated me about why I was there, telling me "Don't open any doors." Absolutely ridiculous. I continued to quietly observe court proceedings. They want us to go away. We're not leaving.
Each week that I return to Federal Plaza, I learn that ICE is increasing their repressive tactics even more. Example: today, while several of us--members of the public, the press and advocates--stood silently in the hallway, a DHS officer lectured us and sought to intimidate us
I walked the mother and boy out of the building as we used a live translation app to communicate to each other in English and Russian, the little boy thankfully oblivious to ICE's cruelty and their detention of his father upstairs. Sadly, many children aren't spared that trauma
...so we asked them to allow me to escort the mother and son out first, ensuring that the little boy wouldn't have to watch ICE take his father away.
As we walked out of the courtroom together, masked ICE agents confronted us, blocking the doorway. The agents told the father to come with them, insisting on taking him away without any justification. It was clear that we couldn't prevent the agents from detaining the father...
I witnessed one particularly disturbing encounter with ICE while I was escorting a family out of their court hearing this morning. The family was a Russian-speaking couple with their young son, who appeared to be 4 years old. The judge had just set their trial date for 2029.
Today I returned to Federal Plaza to observe court proceedings and support our neighbors attending their immigration hearings. As ever, numerous masked ICE agents filled the hall, hunting respondents, separating people from their families and communities regardless of case status
I 100% urge the Governor to ban masked ICE agents. I spoke with Spectrum News about why ICE shouldn't be able to hide their faces & about why we need to pass #NY4All, which would ban local law enforcement from working with ICE. Watch / read more here: spectrumlocalnews.com/nys/central-ny…
After a harrowing month in ICE custody, Derlis is finally home. His release was made possible by his parents’ strength, the support of classmates and teachers, and local groups that stepped up to provide legal help. Too many families are still living this nightmare. We must keep…
Here’s the moment Queens high school student Derlis Chusin reunited with his family after being detained in an ICE facility for over a month. @CBSNewYork @CBSNews
Shameful, but lately not surprising. One of my bills, S5609, would codify a ban on the police using facial recognition to make arrests – including loopholes like the one the NYPD used to target a student protestor. thecity.nyc/2025/07/18/nyp…

Transgender people in immigration detention centers are at heightened risk of violence, medical neglect and prolonged solitary confinement. Now, they face a new threat from the Trump administration: being erased and disappeared from ICE records. theintercept.com/2025/07/11/ice…
Welcome home Joselyn! A few weeks ago I stood alongside Joselyn's family in front of 26 Federal Plaza, which where she was originally abducted from. While I'm glad she's home safe, she should have never been dragged to Louisiana in the first place. thecity.nyc/2025/07/16/que…
