Replace The M8
@ReplacetheM8
Campaign to remove the motorway from Glasgow city centre and replace it with something better. @replacethem8.bsky.social http://instagram.com/replacethem8
This is how some other cities are dealing with the same challenge. Glasgow features! Which approach from the book do you want Glasgow to follow? ££ Removal and replacement ? £ Working with the structure ? ££££ tunnel replacement ?
Here it is. Expressway World by Richard J Williams. Glasgow is one of the case studies. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v46/…
Should we embrace the M8 and ask @glasgowcc to sort out the muddle of roads, broken surfaces and underpasses beneath it?
Were they right when they said "this scar will never heal"?

A different angle on the mess created when the M8 was driven through Cowcaddens, #Glasgow, in the late '60s and early '70s. I've marked Stow College as a point of reference. Pic from Glasgow Motorway Archive.
Th first 5 years of fighting to sort out the mess that is the central M8 in Glasgow. What should we do over the next 5 years?

"Almost all resources and funding are oriented towards the car: the privatised bus system is a joke, the Subway hasn't been extended since the 1890s" Owen Hatherley reviews The Expressway World. newleftreview.org/sidecar/posts/…

Japanese people run tiny shops like this because they're allowed to. We could also be allowed to, and that's what "urbanism" is all about. thedeletedscenes.substack.com/p/backyard-cof…

Stuck Culture creates a time warp which makes the passage of time feel different. 20 years before 1998 was 1978. 2 entirely different mass cultural eras came and went in those 20 years. For us? Things have been looking the same
Gdansk demonstrates how restricting cars can make room for more city.
Trams can completely transform cities for the better. Here is a before and after the tram arrived in Odense, Denmark. Huge amounts of new homes were built, alongside the route, the busy road was narrowed and tunneled, and the streets pedestrianised and returned to people.
See you later

It's difficult to better express how much the radical deprioritisation of motor traffic will improve society than when it actually happens:

Again; the M8, one of the worse acts of municipal vandalism perpetrated in the glory of the Great God Car, & at the cost of the loss of magnificent Victorian/Edwardian Glasgow built heritage
There are very few really nice walking routes between say central station and the Hydro, and there should be. Argyle Street should be a good choice but the route is killed by the M8 and expressway. Broomielaw is the best option but the riverside is very poor.
This is the front and setting for 3 of Glasgow's modern icon buildings... But it looks like the front of an out of town retail park. Is there a plan? Is there a vision? Because this is a bit embarrassing. @GlasgowHydro @SECGlasgow

This is Glasgow's equivalent of the Eiffel Tower. But its setting is a tangle of tarmac and car parks. It's just weird...

Can't wait to be there!
