CPS Parent
@ParentCps
Parent to two children in a neighborhood school. Not part of a school system, teachers' union, charter, or anything, really.
The fairly obscene reality is that schools happily embraced a form of ability grouping that tracks kids in Kindergarten… and doesn’t work! – based on vibes about it. (Also because it felt like an easy model for differentiation.) And equally, schools have embraced detracking in…
The strangest thing about the ability group conversation – which is everywhere lately – is that it ignores the prevalence of ability grouping (based on reading level), which was the norm for elementary reading instruction in the Balanced Literacy era (~2002-2022ish).…
Thankfully Mayor Johnson was too incompetent to get this wasteful idea implemented in Chicago.
Despite a recent $750k taxpayer subsidy, the shelves at Kansas City's government-run grocery store are "almost bare." It also lost $885k last year and is, unsurprisingly, hemorrhaging customers.
The Democratic Party basically never talks about improving primary education as a national issue and I find it super bizarre.
You may not know this, but Sold a Story would not have happened if not for public media. I've worked in public media my entire career. It's foundational to my professional - and personal - life. I'm deeply concerned about the future of the industry. americanpublicmedia.org/support
When reading with your early reader this summer, make sure to cue them to look at the text, not the pictures. If you approach a tricky but decodable word like “sandwich,” help your reader divide it into syllables. This trick will serve them for years to come!
A good reminder to those who blame Mayor Johnson for everything.
Just a reminder that Chicago Public Schools are running at a surplus if you don't count the rising interest payments from loans that Emanuel, Daley and Lightfoot took for their failed pet projects. (Johnson borrowed some too, but the least of the 4).
A curfew w a 30 min warning would be abused by cops & unfair to kids trying to transfer el to bus or below ground to elevated. Run it as 90 minutes, enuf to stop more gathering. @Andrefor40th would you vote yes then, or is this a philosophy of not giving more power to police?
The motion to override Mayor Brandon Johnson’s veto of Ald Hopkins’ curfew ordinance FAILS 27-22. Supporters needed 34 yeses. Johnson officially shepherds Chicago's first mayoral veto since 2006
Good story here from a rural school principal on how they improved reading scores: the74million.org/article/how-on…
Your turn @TonySandersSupt
👏 YES, Missouri! This is what leadership looks like. Banning 3-cueing means more kids will get access to the actual science of reading, not guesswork! Let’s keep this momentum going. Every child. Every state. Every reader. #Ditch3Cueing #ScienceofReading
The new law will expand on efforts by the state’s education department to improve literacy in K-12 schools. Via @MO_Independent buff.ly/dPZfU3N
Rates of dyslexia would be lower if 1. Evidence based tier 1 instruction 2. Teacher Prep included dyslexia & SOR 3. Universal screening 4. Early & EFFECTIVE intervention. Bonus schools would produce better readers w/stronger vocabulary, better math & science ~a dyslexia mom
These rounds of teacher layoffs are proving that it happens under any administration.
677 SECA's sounds like a lot. That's more than one per school right? How many SECA's are employed by cps @SEIULocal73?
CPS laid off 1,458 employees Friday: 432 teachers, 311 paraprofessionals, 33 security officers and 677 special education classroom assistants. Only 48 more employees were laid off this year than last. W / @KateArmanini chicagotribune.com/2025/07/11/chi…
CPS laid off 1,458 school employees today. CPS expects most to find jobs at other schools before the start of the year and is also creating retention pools, including for special education teachers + SECAs. CTU said most of its members will also have the chance to be rehired.
A round of CPS layoff notices went out today. You hearing anything @katecperez_ @beckyvevea @WBEZeducation ?
what also happened in the process of experiencing targeted harassment is mom reached out to Office of Student Protections she was also in touch with the Board of Education she learned everyone is in a circular conflict of interest, no one was interested in her son's well-being
I agree. Other states are doing this.
At its rally Wednesday, the teachers union demanded that Gov. J.B. Pritzker call a special legislative session in order to allocate more state funding to education funding in light of potential federal funding cuts. Several states, including New Mexico and Colorado, are…

the cps board decided to start its meeting today with a closed session it took 5ish hours for them to finish their closed session and immediately they went into a 30 minute recess if you're trying to make a public comment at today's meeting, it's absurdly hard and on purpose
