14 years of conflict have created one of the world’s most severe displacement crises, leaving millions of Syrians in extreme hardship. Over 13 million Syrians have been displaced, with more than half internally displaced and residing in overcrowded camps and informal settlements.
On #WorldRefugeeDay, thank you @FilippoGrandi for your leadership, and @Refugees for your incredible dedication and service to the communities we serve. History shows we have all been refugees, and suggests we will be again. Let’s respond with greater empathy and generosity.
Today is #WorldRefugeeDay. I am spending it in Syria with some of the 600,000 people who have returned from neighbouring countries after 14 years of conflict. Syria today is where returning Syrians — given security, opportunities and support — can finally stop being refugees.
This year, #WorldRefugeeDay comes with hope for millions of Syrians who can dream of going back home and rebuilding their lives. However, sustainable returns require livelihoods, infrastructure & services. The @UN reiterates its commitment to help #Syria & its people recover.
