A vast return operation for Afghans in Iran is underway. I have agreed with officials in Kabul and Tehran to resume tripartite talks to address their concerns, ensure the fulfillment of their responsibilities, uphold the rights of the people impacted and mobilize donor support.

I discussed the returnee emergency with the Taliban leadership and the importance of a safe and dignified response for all returnees, especially women and children. More international support for the Afghan people is needed at a time of multiple challenges in the country.

A new Afghan emergency: thousands of Afghans expelled by Iran cross daily into their country — officials and aid agencies are striving to organize and help, but more funding is needed, especially in places where returnees head back to: reintegration will be a big, big challenge!

Today UNHCR launched a report confirming what I have seen in many places with my own eyes. Funding cuts and dramatic levels of displacement have a devastating impact on millions of refugees around the world — with entire regions at risk of instability. unhcr.org/news/briefing-…
As part of a great visit to Dublin I had an excellent discussion with #Tánaiste @SimonHarrisTD — we agreed that Ireland’s strong support for a rules-based, multilateral system is invaluable in a crisis-ridden world and remains a beacon of hope for all victims of war and violence.

Ireland is one of UNHCR’s strongest partners — I was happy to thank #Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD for the Irish government’s unflinching support across all key areas of our work, and for being a vocal champion of the @UN, of multilateralism and of international cooperation.

It was inspiring — as always — to be received by @PresidentIRL Michael D Higgins during my visit to Dublin. It was an honour to convey to him, on behalf of UNHCR, my respect and gratitude for the extraordinary support provided by Ireland over the years to the cause of refugees.

With the Mayor of Rome @gualtierieurope — UNHCR and Rome’s municipality will continue to work together to help thousands of refugees be productive members of the city’s society and economy. Thank you for the exemplary cooperation!

Con il Sindaco di Roma @gualtierieurope — UNHCR e il Comune capitolino continuano a lavorare insieme per dare a migliaia di rifugiati l’opportunità di dare il loro contributo alla società e all’economia della capitale. Grazie dell’esemplare collaborazione!

Grateful to President Sergio Mattarella for being an authoritative and wise voice in support of the pursuit of peace, rights and international cooperation — in Italy, Europe and beyond. Grazie, Presidente. @Quirinale

At the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference I was encouraged by the commitment to make the return of refugees and displaced people an integral part of reconstruction plans. Meanwhile, with civilians suffering from devastating Russian attacks, humanitarian aid continues to be needed.

In Lampedusa. So that we do not forget those whose journeys of hope have ended in shipwrecks. I pay tribute to @guardiacostiera, @GDF and the NGOs bravely saving people in danger. We also need a strengthened European rescue effort to prevent more unnecessary deaths at sea.

A Lampedusa.

I arrived in #Lampedusa, where hundreds of thousands of refugees and migrants have landed for years in search of safety and hope — here to celebrate solidarity, advocate for dignity, remember those who died at sea, and help find solutions along dangerous migratory routes.

I was very happy and honoured to receive Foreign Minister @thorgkatrin of Iceland and to discuss how to ensure that her government’s strong support to UNHCR is as strategic and useful as possible. In these difficult times, it is encouraging to have friends like Iceland. Takk!

An honour to host @theresa_may and members of the Global Commission on Modern Slavery, which she chairs. UNHCR will continue to contribute to its fight against the exploitation and trafficking of human beings. @gcmodernslavery @ProfAThompson @AdviserAdaDieng @NuffieldCollege

If realized, the agreement between the Democratic Rep of Congo and Rwanda can bring peace at last to millions whose lives have been torn for decades by violence, hatred and greed, including refugees and displaced. As foreseen by the agreement, UNHCR stands ready to do its part.
Refugee resettlement saves lives and enriches communities. It shows solidarity with countries hosting many refugees. As millions are forced to flee, dramatically reduced resettlement places in 2025 is a loss of opportunity for us all. Watch👇🏻 youtu.be/0GJDzp2pTEk?si… via @YouTube
Thanks @GermanyDiplo @BMZ_Bund @BMI_Bund @natalie_pawlik for good discussions in Berlin. We share concerns about possible, deep cuts in humanitarian funding impacting people in need and stability of key regions. UNHCR remains a strategic partner for Germany on refugee policies.
