Tremendously useful unpacking of a number of the factors at play in the cancellation of The Late Show.
I have a fairly long reflection on the cancelation of @StephenAtHome, informed by my own experience working for a big, dumb network. natesilver.net/p/why-colbert-…
Poring over old QB data for some NFL stuff we're working on and just realized that Rex Grossman was the starting QB for a 13-3 Super Bowl team, I'd have for sure assumed you were gaslighting me if you'd told me that when I woke up this morning.
I mean his ostensibly anti-gay marriage stance in 2008 was always kind of BS/pandering but one might also note that public support for gay rights increased massively during his tenure in office and also same-sex marriage became the law of the land.
Reminder that Obama was anti-queer until 2012
What a joke. This isn’t an autopsy, it’s a fig leaf on the status quo. The overriding goal here is not to seek answers, it’s to avoid making anyone mad - a clear sign of a fundamentally cooked organization.
Trump's sudden about face on the Epstein Files is ruffling feathers in his unruffle-able base. Will he be able to subdue the true believers? And how should we think about conspiracy theories? @NateSilver538 & @mkonnikova weigh in on #RiskyBusiness: lnk.to/wr8KL6
Part of the problem you have in a declining business like linear TV, even if it's reasonably cashflow-positive in the short run, is that it's hard to attract good managerial and executive talent if it feels like a long-term dead end.
I've got a fun chat up with @Lis_Smith and @FrankBruni at the NYT, talking about Democratic messaging around the Big, Beautiful Bill and other issues. nytimes.com/2025/07/17/opi…

This is basically affirmative action for boring people.
Elite universities are going to start using peer-scored civility ratings for admissions?! Sorry, that’s a terrible idea. Why not just admit people based on their scores and then teach them to debate and dialogue? You don’t need to go full CCP to solve this problem.
Talk about the Chatbot calling the kettle black, now ChatGPT is criticizing *me* for using "long em-dash-heavy sentences".

Inflation is a term for a broad increase in the price level. There's no magic exemption because you intentionally pursued a dumbass set of politics. Many episodes of inflation are caused by dumbass policy choices of one form or another.
“Tariff inflation” is an oxymoron. Raising a price via an explicit policy choice is not inflation, and resulting relative price changes in the economy are not a cognizable subject of monetary policy. A Fed holding rates higher in response is politicizing its role.
The worst thing that happened to cultural writing in the 2010s is that nearly every writer chased this strategy about tv, books, movies, etc because all the clicks were in “why [some thing people love] is problematic.” Did irreparable damage to the whole field.
Wouldn't expect a Guardian critic to get this but lots of people like talking about sports for sports' sake, the left would probably have more influence if it were a little more chill and respected people's interest in having hobbies that aren't politics. theguardian.com/sport/ng-inter…

At some point soon-ish all of the major live poker tournament series will use a shot clock, often from the first hand onward for any sort of mid+ buy-in, and it will be a much better experience along almost every dimension and everyone will ask why this didn't happen years ago.
