Thank you, Dr. Kelly, for your very kind updated review of my new book: The Scientific Principles of Reading Instruction
@NateJoseph19 Make this text required reading for graduate students in education programs and maybe even adjuncts requiring more research understanding. Not only will your thinking about research be dynamically transformed, your use of the research will be thoughtful tailored…
Removing test scores is about pretending the kids are learning when they’re not.
Great article in today's Winnipeg Free Press. To schools that are cancelling tests, grades, percentages: we see the impact of this at post-secondary. Employers do too. "We can't keep [kids] wrapped up in bubble wrap, hoping life will be kind to them. It won't be."

Giggling at @burnsmk1's SSSR practitioner day slides... 🫢 Y'all, pls focus on isolation, blending, & segmenting.

You may not know this, but Sold a Story would not have happened if not for public media. I've worked in public media my entire career. It's foundational to my professional - and personal - life. I'm deeply concerned about the future of the industry. americanpublicmedia.org/support

PaTTan just published thier 2025 virtual math conference sessions on YouTube. Lots of great information from fantastic math researchers including @MrZachG @pjr146 @rastokke @rscodding
Indeed, reading and spelling don't involve or require playing around (deletion and manipulation) with sounds or letter/s. So much time and effort wasted - and worse still when these activities are used as part of (unnecessary) assessment and thought to be pre-requisite skills.
Too often, phonics is 'done' TO the children (my turn, your turn) and the children don't get to properly APPLY themselves and PRACTICE with their own rich vocabulary, paper-based content.
Two easy ways you can make your current phonemic awareness program better: 1. Write the drills on the board, so the students can see the letters. 2. Skip the manipulation and deletion drills. Stick to the segmenting and blending drills.
My summer book recommendation... my new favorite book! Yessss @NateJoseph19
High quality education increases equity. Putting low quality pedagogies on a cultural pedestal leaves us with lower academic results, for the sake of self congratulation.
Excellent article @C_Hendrick! The same could be written today about major math ed orgs and ed schools that dismiss the importance of and strong empirical evidence for memorizing math facts. They’re from the same ed philosophy as whole language too.

Congratulations!
Honoured to announce my appointment to the UNESCO IBE Science of Learning editorial board. I’m excited to support the work of bringing clear, actionable research to educators worldwide.
I've decided to apply to present here. I hope @justinskycak or someone from @_MathAcademy_ team applies to speak here. I'd also like to see: @MrZachG @KurtE_NIFDI @NIFDI @janhasbrouck @EBLIreads @ReadSimplified @NateJoseph19 @rastokke @Doug_Lemov @P_A_Kirschner @mrbartonmaths
Our 9/13 conference in Denver will be great because YOU are great. We want to hear teaching ideas that are * interesting * useful * important, & * supported by research @researchED_US and @DenverMuseumNS The application deadline is July 15: bit.ly/3HzcwF7
A well-written and clearly argued piece articulating the perils of hitching a discipline’s wagon to ideology rather than steadily accumulated empirical evidence. While knowledge has advanced in education, implementation has lagged behind and continues to be highly variable.

We have a serious focus on literacy in our school! Its is so important that we created a reading program at Yardgoats Stadium in downtown Hartford! Thank you @GoYardGoats Thank you @TimRasinski1 and @NateJoseph19 for teaching me the importance of fluency and repeated reading!
I have to write a proposal for Research Ed Halifax. What should my topic be?
An analysis of the 2003 and 2007 @TIMSSandPIRLS mathematics surveys concludes "better achievement was associated with more teacher-led instruction, less connection to students’ daily lives, and—in particular—more memorizing of formulas and procedure": bit.ly/4eU9N61
Is <ck> a useless grapheme? Could we just universally use <k> to spell the /k/ sound and improve the English language system.
