No. It just would make the position for the US more difficult and raise the chance of further war by magnitudes... Because extended dererrence didn't work.
But the US would have another option - to reduce the damage to "zero cities" by not getting into war to protect allies. That would work much better as damage limitation, wouldn't it? 2/2
