"Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart." themarginalian.org/2024/03/22/lov…
Friendship is FLOURishing in NJ with @LindsaySchlegel & @DorianSpeed in town for a lovely afternoon at the local vineyard! We also decided @EricMichaelCyr & his band to need come perform here on their next tour.

Ended up discussing the power of literature and storytelling with my uber driver last night, which has somewhat restored my faith in humanity.
One way to understand your own condition is to write something and spend a long time revising it. In revising you teach yourself. You find your own information buried in your body. It is still alive until you are not. --Fanny Howe, RIP
Poem of the Day: Cut Grass by Philip Larkin poemsontheunderground.org/cut-grass
“Imagine: a music lesson with no explanation of time signatures, a drawing class with no study of line or form, a painting course with no instruction in color, a dance class with no basic steps or counting. Solid instruction in the arts always begins with the fundamentals.”
Now up at NVR, Susan Delaney Spear offers a rigorous, effective, and engaging approach to teaching students metrical poetry.
Literally just saw a cat sitting on a street corner that was so utterly still that I thought it was a statue. Professor McGonagall, is that you?? 🧙♀️ ⚡️
Last night, I made @valerie_reads recipe for Flannery O’Connor’s favorite dessert, peppermint chiffon pie, for our book club’s discussion of Wise Blood, hosted by the lovely @LindsaySchlegel! theparisreview.org/blog/2024/07/0…

Here are the opening lines of one my favorite poems from the "Poets of the University of St. Thomas" special issue, a poem of clear images and philosophical depth in conversation with Wallace Steven by Mary Grace Mangano (@MG_Mangan0)

oh you’re too good for Birkenstocks?? The shoe Jesus Christ literally had a brand deal with???
Beautiful morning — the first without rain in a long time — praying the psalms outside with iced coffee. ☀️ ☕️ Very much agree with Dorothy Day who said, “My strength returns to me with my cup of coffee and the reading of the psalms.”
NVR is open for poetry submissions to its summer issue for just a few more days. The window closes on Monday, June 23. We’d be honored if you shared your work with us!
What a joy it was to hear fellow @stthomashouston alumni poets read from the special @newversereview spring issue on Saturday night! ✨ @StevenEKnepper @lclinton_tx @JMWSPT @dacooperpoet @Zina_GomezLiss @Tupelo_OG @tnichollsmith
