Learning Disabilities & Autism at Manchester Met
@LearningMet
We do research with people with learning disabilities, autistic people, and their families. We are committed to social justice and more equal research practice.
.@GeorgeJulian really is one of life unsung heroes. Humbly. quietly and relentlessly advocating for people with autism and learning disabilities and their families. A powerhouse of a woman ❤️
And of course the inquest reporting by @GeorgeJulian that underpins all of this.
The Coroner Mr Crispin Oliver who had humility and humanity in spades found neglect played a role in Myles death. The judgement is here. It's a catalogue of missed opportunities and diagnostic overshadowing. We were shut out by the medical team. georgejulian.co.uk/2025/07/11/myl…
Important reporting from @Channel4News and the ‘where’s @AliveLeder ?’ has been a dark and indicative farce. And/but I agree with @GeorgeJulian who writes that the report is ‘only’ a report and has so far, as a process, changed very little: georgejulian.co.uk/2025/07/16/apa…
We’re very excited about this book. 👊
Eek. You can pre-order my new book from today with a tasty discount. Out August 8.
Thank you Reuben for asking those questions, we will wait patiently for the response channel4.com/news/is-govern…
Oof. A tough watch. The ongoing, where’s @AliveLeder ? “Data issues.” @johnpringdns @DisRightsUK
Is government ‘sitting on’ damning report into learning disabled people’s deaths? channel4.com/news/is-govern…
‘We know why people are dying, we know how people are dying and we are doing nothing about it’ @sarasiobhan
Wow. @itvnews is smashing it this week. Enraging/beautiful piece about Myles Scriven's life, inquest and wider context from @DanielHewittITV and team. itv.com/news/2025-07-1…
I’m just not sure what to say about this. It’s not a dataset about unnecessary plastic objects.
The LeDeR dataset is complex and the report requires and benefits from checks. But the process could do with being more streamlined and better defined
Oh dear. Why is the ‘voice of learning disability’ joining this ‘call’ and not leading it? We are nearly 8 months into the publication delay.
NEW: @mencap_charity joins calls for govt to act. Calls delay “worrying”. “We urge the Government to treat this with the urgency it deserves and not shy away from the uncomfortable truth that for many years the healthcare system has failed people who are already marginalised”.
The layers of cynicism and ignorance here are gruelling. This bunch are beyond waking up, they’ve achieved zip all for people with learning disabilities in the last decade. @mencap_charity
Mencap only notice after it reaches ITV news…
Some reflections about the judgement in Myles Scriven’s inquest. mydaftlife.com/2025/07/11/myl…
Thank you @RachaelMaskell & colleagues for doing the right thing & challenging the disgraceful welfare reforms. I know how difficult it was to break the whip It matters so much to our family Thank you
LATEST: Keir Starmer is to remove the whip from MPs for persistent rebellions, starting with at least four on Wednesday afternoon. The Guardian understands that four MPs set to lose the whip are Rachael Maskell, Neil Duncan-Jordan, Brian Leishman, and Chris Hinchliff.
I'm also interested in how distant the published report ends up from the submitted version. Best part of a year is plenty of time for a rewrite.
#HumanRights are for everyone @wesstreeting, yet two recent reports from @itvnews prove that, time and again, the Right to Life, the Right to Freedom from Torture and Inhuman and Degrading Treatment and the Right to Liberty (amongst others) just don’t apply to autistic and…
NEW: Learning disabled people die 20+ years earlier than the general population. This is why. Myles was 31. He had a totally treatable blood clot yet a coroner found his medical treatment neglectful, complacent & dismissive. I spoke with his family. itv.com/news/2025-07-1…
He found the lack of supporting Myles with his learning disabilities and autism by both the Trust and GPs contributed directly to his preventable death. We still await a full apology from @CHFTNHS and Dalton Surgery Huddersfield.
No adjustments made to support Myles to have equal healthcare and an equal chance of living. Both the @CHFTNHS and the GPs tried to undermine the family to say he had capacity and didn't need adjustments. The Coroner was having none of it.
This is about my wonderful and beautiful nephew Myles who was let down by Drs @CHFTNHS and Dalton Surgery in Huddersfield .They didn't see him as an equal human being. This happens far too often in the NHS . It has to change itv.com/news/2025-07-1… itv.com/news/2025-07-1…
Thank you @itvnews for your powerful coverage of the avoidable death of Myles and making it clear that his experience is one of many, many others. What more will it take for @wesstreeting and @DHSCgovuk to act and make preventing such deaths a priority?
Well worth a catch up (30 mins in). How anyone involved in the Leder programme could allow an 8-9 month publication delay is beyond me. Simply abhorrent. 2/2
Just watched @itvnews tie in Myles Scriven's life, death and inquest to the missing @AliveLeder report, highlighting the grotesque obfuscation about its whereabouts. 1.
