What if one solution to winning back the public's trust is...to trust the public? Weekend Essay for the @NewStatesman on the labour movement's long history of working with communities to make life a bit better, based on my paper for @iconeighbours: newstatesman.com/politics/2025/…
Community work in action. Great to pop over to Anston to help with decorating the scouts hut. A brilliant team.

A hundred sculptures along 3 km of beach… Sir Antony Gormley takes me to Crosby and describes his love of landscape @BBCRadio4 @bbcSounds bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…
This was a great speech.
My mum texts me when I stand up to speak in Parliament. She tells me to fix my tie or sort my hair out. A mum’s job is never done! And when I talk about growing up in poverty, she says sorry. Like so many others, my mum lives with guilt, but the fault lies with the politics that…
Labour MP and former Labour Together director @joshsimonsmp writes in @TheHouseMag that if you do a wealth tax wrong, “you harm, not help, social justice” “The debate comes down to a judgement: at what level does taxing the rich cost more than it generates?”
Our up to £1bn Better Futures Fund will help tackle the structural causes of poverty. Bringing together public funds with social impact investments, it will open up opportunities for training and work across the country. My interview with the @guardian theguardian.com/politics/2025/…
Could digital ID cards help tackle migration? @HarrietHarman tells @BethRigby and @RuthDavidsonPC what she thinks the government could do. #ElectoralDysfunction 🎧: podfollow.com/electoraldysfu… 📺: youtube.com/playlist?list=…
This is an edited audio clip which deliberately and fraudulently misquotes me speaking at a meeting with local residents yesterday evening. I have been clear that this issue is a key priority for Bassetlaw people and I am holding the Government to account, as I was elected to do
Did the leader of Labour’s ‘Red Wall’ group of MPs really say ‘I don’t care if we stop the boats’? Has their mask slipped?
Pleased Digital ID getting renewed focus in aftermath of important deal with 🇫🇷. Many MPs have been pushing this for many months/years. Time for comprehensive action! progressivebritain.org/digital-id-emp…
“It's absolutely obvious to me that people should have a digital identity... Let's stop shouting at the French. A lot of this is on us.” Ex-MI6 boss, Sir Alex Younger, backs calls for digital ID cards and adds that they could help deter small boat crossings. #Newsnight
The weird thing is that many of those most exercised by small boats are those most vociferously against a proper ID card system. Likewise there’s a strong left-wing opposition despite the fact that poorer people would benefit most from a reliable form of free ID. Bizarre.
For the very first time, migrants arriving via small boat will be detained and returned to France in short order. This Government is breaking the business model of criminal smuggling gangs and securing our borders.
Beautiful Whiston Brook. Thank you to all those who came to see me at my street surgery. Lots of issues to take up. 🌹

French politicians suggest the UK should do more to tackle illegal working, maybe by introducing an ID card. If only someone would come up with a workable, affordable, popular proposal for one. Oh, wait... labourtogether.uk/all-reports/br…
An important intervention in the @NewStatesman here👇
There have been many achievements, but the lesson from the first year of government is that only radical, bold and fundamental reform of the state will do. Or we face political disaster. My piece for @NewStatesman 👇 newstatesman.com/politics/2025/…
“An enormously difficult context means Labour must be more radical, not less – and fundamentally rewrite the rules of the state.” 🎯
