Adult and Pediatric Spine Surgeon, Educator, Dad, Husband, ‘leave it better than you found it’ Don’t like my tweets, blame my children
June is Scoliosis Awareness Month. Today I want to highlight something I’m deeply passionate about—the work of the GSO (Global Spine Outreach). I’ve been a volunteer surgeon with the GSO for seven years and more recently as a board of directors. For over a decade, the GSO has…

For my colleagues, Every week, I get a message or a call from a physician—usually early in their career—navigating a tough situation. Contract disputes, practice transitions, burnout, feeling lost in the system. It’s not always about needing an answer. Sometimes it’s just about…

A quick primer for new reps in my room…. Communicate with the team Be honest Be clear We are all on the same team and our goal is to provide care for our patients Never refer to me as someone’s boy on zoom when you are speaking to another rep because you are unsure of your…
What happens when insurance denies care after it’s been delivered? How does it impact the patient? This isn’t a hypothetical—it happens often, and in my experience, it’s becoming more common. Most people think a prior authorization means they’re covered. That the treatment is…

I have always had the view that a transparent…. Efficient prior auth system is better than the back end clawbacks….. As insurance companies are more willing to forego prior auth…. Delayed payments, retroactive denials will become the norm…. Currently, clawbacks cost: •$1…
This Is Where We Get It Wrong (From an independent physicians perspective) Prior authorizations are a problem—but they’re a small part of a much larger, more dangerous system failure. They’re visible. They’re frustrating. They make headlines. But they’re not the core issue.…

An organizational/documentation question for my arthroscopy/endoscopy colleagues…. Iusually suck at taking intraoperative photographs…. But have been told that I need to be better at it…. Any suggestions on how to organize and save it…. Do you just leave it on hospital…

I agree that WNBA players should be paid more. But you know what? Physician salaries are only 8% of total healthcare costs and we have idiot healthcare economists, saying we make too much money and we should get cut every year. They know what they can do with themselves .
Yep, I have so many things I want to accomplish. I have so many things that I want to experience. I joke about retirement … but honestly, that will never be me I will move away from what I am doing, and move on to the list of 100 other things that I want to do … In the end,…
Retirement is a psyop. You don’t stop working… you stop growing. Your calendar goes blank. Your identity fades. You become a ghost in golf shoes. Humans are built to build. Retirement should be renamed: “I do what I want.” Could be a business. A book. A garden. But it sure as…
Other than climbing the ladder… I still fit the young guy I wanna grow, I want to develop, I wanna care for my patients But I do want to take over the world 😂 I’ve never really outgrown that… I just don’t want to do it through their ladder That’s always been my dream……
Young doctors: I just want to keep learning, publish, climb the ladder, and take care of patients. This is everything I have worked for, and I am building the life I dreamed of. The hospital and insurance keep trying to control me, but that is just part of the job. Doctors 10…
Stop looking back…. Stop worrying about the person next to you It’s not selfish to focus on us Many of us can point to where the @AmerMedicalAssn, our predecessors, or federal policy failed us. These were not small missteps—they shaped decades of lost autonomy, fractured trust,…

To my fellow docs… You were nEver the problem

The nature of my practice is a little bit different since I follow a subset of patients over decades… (I’ve known and treated Chad since he was a kid and he is now in his late 20s. The photographs were taken and posted with his and his families permission) I often take care…
Rather than focusing on you, each patient is expressing that they have different needs. Have you ever experienced ac5-star hotel or high-end spa? You’ll absolutely never hear staff laughing out loud or having personal conversations when guests are around. Why is that? I’m…
My multiple personalities… Clinic personality: cheerleader, high energy, fully engaged with patients. OR personality: quiet, brooding, and a little intense. Home personality: lazy, sarcastic, useless dad who just wants to eat cereal and hide from emails.
One of my favorite photos is in time at Shriners in Philadelphia… We had 4 patients in a halo playing the basketball shooting game in the rec area… It was awesome
This is how they treat scoliosis on children
I’m honestly surprised I haven’t gotten a bad review for body odor. If I’ve been in the OR all day and I wore lead? I smell feral. My wife barely lets me in the house before I shower. 😂
Got a review once for bad breath … it was during early COVID and we were all wearing masks because it was 2021. 🤣
