Even if you think the United States should have a net zero trade balance (which would make us poorer in consumption), enforcing trade balance at the PARTNER-by-PARTNER level is insane! That is just a barter economy. We invented MONEY to have things like triangular trade!
I have found this to be true. The distribution of a random sample of lived experiences is called "data".
"Lived experience" is typically invoked to elevate individual opinions above hard data and serious thinking. It is a phrase used by those who wish to privilege their views above the views of others without providing an argument for why that should be.
Claude just wrote me the most cracked line of R code I have ever seen sub("^([^_]*_[^_]*)_.*$", "\\1", str) Can any of my followers figure out what I asked?
Asking Claude to help me get SBATCH files to run on a SLURM scheduler feels like making robots wrestle with each other for my entertainment. I'm basically running an episode of BATTLEBOTS
Would I have dedicated my life to reading books and analyzing how everyone smells in them? No. Am I glad that that's a job that exists and that our society can support? Absolutely. Congrats Dr. Louks!
Thrilled to say I passed my viva with no corrections and am officially PhDone.
My $0.02: store credit cards no longer serve a clear economic purpose besides exploiting the financially illiterate. When large retailers had more financial capacity than banks (pre-1970), they were the most efficient lenders. Today it's just a cash grab by a dying industry.

The Democrat strategy of offering everybody "tax credits" to bandage the bad effects of their shortsighted regulations reads like a total lie to most people, because it is! The standard deduction, by design, makes it so almost no one actually receives these credits
If you think about it, Occam's razor was an extremely early form of model regularization. Occam was essentially saying when scoring your mental models, you should add a penalty term for model complexity.
Universities in the developed world are golden gooses whose ever-growing yield is causing a shortage of baskets But rather than weaving more baskets we are choosing to execute the geese

Americans also call solitaire "Beat the Devil"
Devil Went Down to Georgia is fascinating to me because it’s so American. In any other culture it would be a cautionary tale of hubris and fooling with the demonic. But in America, Johnny actually is just better than the Devil. It’s so American
Market economies are doing an excellent job of reducing emissions actually
Nothing new but it bears repeating. A planned economy becomes increasingly necessary every year we wait on.ft.com/3VRjaKB via @FT
A PhD signals that you have the patience and dedication to format a dissertation in LaTeX, which is all prospective employers need to see
Silent heroes do not need to be silent! We can choose to sing their praises to the hilltops!
I think people don't fully appreciate how much effort goes into creating and maintaining good R/Stata packages. Folks like @lrberge (fixest) and my student Mauricio Bravo (gtools, Stata honestdid), among many others, are true silent heroes. 🍺 to all the stats sw developers!
While Physicists might not like it, "velocity" no longer means change in distance, but distance itself
While economists and editors might not like it, the meaning of the word "inflation" has now changed from rising costs to high prices. trib.al/65gBVqO
