1/ Better late than never, here’s a long thread of threads summarizing our MOSAIC preprint. If you’re curious about the process by which a new microscope is conceived and brought into the world, this is the thread for you. If you’ve come for eye candy, there’s plenty of that too…
If this is indeed what they plan to do, then I don't think American research will survive this budget cut. But I don't actually understand this plan--as the numbers don't make any sense. Much more transparency is needed.
I spoke with an NIH program officer yesterday who said that, given the massive 44% cut planned for NIH, they were only planning to award about 12 new grants before the end of the year, which are mainly ones in the 1st and 2nd percentile, so the 3 grants we had with good scores…
A new study led by @timothy_sit shows that different layers of mouse V1 integrate visual and non-visual signals differently. L2/3 activity is dominated by vision (or spontaneous fluctuations) and L5 by movement. This leads to different geometries. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Update on this: we just received funds for this grant. Of course I don't know if my complaining had any effect, since I haven't heard from anyone working at the NIH. Many challenges ahead, but for now this is an indication that things are becoming more "normal," or so I would…
NIH is slow to send funds for non-competing renewals. This is disrupting research in many labs, including mine. I was expecting payment for one NINDS grant 2 months ago, but I'm still waiting. I don't understand exactly why this is happening. It'd be impossible for us to…
2 cases of drinking water (48 bottles) delivered to my doorstep in the rain in 1 hr in Shanghai. delivery cost $1.5. water cost $5, but after discount from meituan total cost $2.5. Price and service in China completely insane. I love amazon but this is a different level
Keep your reference letters short and to the point
I didn’t know Kwame is so eloquent. Didn’t expect him to defend the GOAT
Kwame Brown DESTROYS Lebron And Kevin Durant for Disrespecting Jordan 🔥🔥🔥 "Kevin Durant that statement was ignorant, Lebron why tf you chuckling so hard when you supposedly a student of the game. Jordan won 3 championships in a row, he 3 peated jackasses and his father got…

Yes, Ranck was first, but Taube did a lot of important work characterizing HD cells. I think they don't get the recognition they deserve because they are "just" scientists.
Agree. Ranck, IMO a great neuroscientist, discovered HD cells alone. (I was there). Jeff came to the group and along with Bob Muller and Jim, did computer-based recording and major publications (1990, I believe).
these days many computational neuroscientists like to talk about head direction cells. Recently someone said that HD cells are the best example of an important and robust neuroscience finding. Understandable, but nobody is asking why the scientists who discovered them (Ranck…
Talked to a reporter about this. I was asked how this situation affects our research. I gave the obvious answer that, since we are now broke, it's hard to continue the funded research. But the disruption actually goes beyond that. For the past few months most American…

Thrilled to share that my first REVIEW is online @NatRevNeurosci today! We highlighted the molecular and functional diversity of brain-to-body autonomic pathways 📖 Hope you enjoy reading it and find the resources helpful 🤗👇 rdcu.be/euEhn nature.com/articles/s4158…
Online now: Distinct dendritic integration strategies control dynamics of inhibition in the neocortex dlvr.it/TLdx33
Recently I had multiple conversations with multiple neuroscientists who complained about how astonishingly stupid the trendy systems neuroscience work has become. two people independently compared this to bad money driving out good money. Some mentioned that some of the popular…

new preprint from our lab: Modular striatal dynamics and reciprocal inhibition orchestrate skilled action sequencing. Using high-resolution kinematics tracking and neural recordings in mice performing a water-reaching task, we found spatially distributed modules of striatal…
on our lab slack someone shared this picture with the title "angry mouse." I will not share the brain area stimulated.
