Where a #HS2 White Elephant becomes a HS2 Dead Duck
Cheaper train tickets typically mean higher subsidies from taxpayers, most of whom hardly ever travel on the railways. Artificially inflated demand then creates a pretext for expensive new capacity like HS2, ripping off taxpayers yet again. manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-m…
Yet another call for even more borrowing. This year the government will borrow at least £140 billion, of which over £110 billion will go to interest payments on previous borrowing (which now totals almost £3 trillion). That’s right — 75% of what we’re borrowing will be used to…
Next budget is crucial. I hope this report and Lords’ Economic affairs committee one will persuade HMT that we need more investment .Markets will not be scared by dropping nonsensical rule that debt ratio must fall in year 5 irrespective of what happens in years 1-4.
We are getting a lot of but but buts on this from the usual tax the rich crew like Dan Neidle etc Okay fine….you argue that this was always going to happen but then it’ll settle down…..so I guess we can expect to see CGT rise again by end of year……right?
Who could have possibly seen this coming, apart from everyone? Womp womp.
Let's keep it simple: Do we need doctors? Yes Is this a job any of us can do? No Is it a highly skilled job requiring rigorous training? Yes Should we pay doctors fairly? Yes Should we also pay other workers fairly? Hell yes. It's not a race to the bottom. Solidarity ✊
I’m at Tramlines (formerly known as the Sheffield Show) in Hillsborough Park. No Police Dog Display, sadly, but I look forward to a ride on the ‘Host Train’ presumably driven by Jarvis Cocker who has kindly invited me to perform. I’m on at 1.30pm - oof, a bit early, even for me!
🚩Government's proposed concessions to the Planning Bill don't protect irreplaceable habitats. The Bill *assumes* that replacement habitats are successfully delivered. Here, Barry Gardiner MP interrogates Matthew Pennycook on this:

So, UK Chancellor of Exchequer thinks concern for bats prevented HS2 reaching Leeds and use of pylons (not cleaper undergounding) will reduce energy bills? Market ideology beats science or even common sense? @RosieP4 @HS2theTruth @NickyGeeson @peteraf1 @SmartGrowthUK @FriendsMoss
I mean honestly Speechless that Ministers talk like this (Also, with pylons, it isn’t just views) independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
It just shows the calibre of our politicians. You literally can't live on a dead planet - and why would you want to? I care about our countryside, as do many other English people. It's the government that's out of touch @RachelReevesMP
Papers today jammed with stories showing the beginning of the end of the age of entitlement. And the return of a focus on needs over wants.

"£104bn of water industry investment will come from bill payers, environment secretary concedes." And there we finally have it, there is no "£104 billion of private sector investment". Question is how long has the SoS known this and why has he kept repeating that myth? Well…

A lot of our problems in our cities can be traced back to this.
