Fred DeLorey explains the simple solution to the longest ballot nitwits "I think the easiest is for the government to step in and hopefully all parties will agree to do this in the fall and put in a bill that just makes it still easy to run." "But maybe you have to have one…
You’re embarrassing yourself. Proportional representation requires a constitutional amendment. Ranked ballots don’t - and even Trudeau regrets not going that route. But groups like Fair Vote chase fantasies and kill real reform. That’s why nothing ever changes.
No constitutional change is required to enact proportional representation as the Friday Conservative pundit claimed in error today. Please issue a correction Fred Delorey and host of Power and Politics, JP Tasker, next Friday August 1, 2025. Note proportional representation…
Notice the elbow was down! ...kidding, and that was actually a great throw.
Not bad for an amateur. Thanks to the Hamilton Italian Centre for letting me join in on a friendly game of bocce this week.
That’s the difference, isn’t it? You study the game like a fan in the bleachers. We’re on the field, making plays.
For its worth, many within the poli sci trade look down their noses at party operatives and lobbyists too. Myopia is a hell of a drug!
My late friend Peter Naglik used to say: "scratch out the political scientist quotes and re-read the piece, it’s always better." I’ve got a joint degree in Poli Sci and Soc, but it was the sociology that proved way more useful in my career.
I’m reminded of the time a senior journalist said they stopped speaking to political scientists after they heard one repeating on radio what the journalist had told them earlier that day. Academics answering questions with questions and speculation does what exactly?
When I first worked on national campaigns 20+ years ago, the worst website in Canada was Elections Canada's. Two decades later, I’m thrilled to report they’ve proudly maintained that tradition. CC' @ElectionsCan_E
"Rather than investing in national campaigns, competitive ridings, or voter outreach, the PPC has channeled the bulk of its spending inward - on salaries, consultants, and party overhead. It operates less like a movement and more like a self-sustaining financial vehicle for its…

$12.89 million raised. Zero seats won. The PPC isn’t a party, it’s a grift. Maxime Bernier’s PPC spends big, but mostly on itself. The numbers don’t lie, @FredDeLorey writes freddelorey.substack.com/p/1289-million… Find out more at nationalnewswatch.com
An important read from @FredDeLorey. Carney is currently leaving a massive amount of ideological space for an NDP revival, but the last election was financially devastating for the party, which may thwart any revival. Significant implications for other parties too.

Great read from the talented @FredDeLorey. The NDP is in serious financial trouble. Actually possible it could fold in a few years. thehub.ca/2025/07/09/fre…

@TheHerleBurly episode of #TheChiefs in the can - out tomorrow.
My friend @FredDeLorey is spot on here. The NDP decided not to contest the vast majority of ridings in Canada because they didn't want to split the vote and see Conservatives win. The result? They helped the Liberals get elected, but bankrupted their party in the process.

"Fewer than 50 of 343 NDP candidates reached the 10 percent vote threshold needed to qualify for a campaign expense rebate from Elections Canada. That’s not just an embarrassing stat; it’s financial ruin. Those rebates, worth several million dollars collectively, are normally how…

Congratulations @FredDeLorey on bringing up a subject literally NOBODY within the party apparatus has ever wanted to talk about, but something I've been saying for a long time that desperately needs to change and it looks like that chicken might be coming home to roost! #cdnpoli
"Meanwhile, the party’s most valuable asset, the Jack Layton Building, its national HQ in Ottawa, is potentially in play. The building has been used to secure loans in the past. If the party defaults, it may have to sell it. The symbolism of losing the home named after their most…
