Human Rights & Democracy at the FCDO. Supporting democratic values, the rules-based international order and human rights for a stable world.
Delighted to speak earlier this week at the opening of @attorneygeneral event on supporting and promoting the rule of law. The rule of law underpins democracy and human rights and supports our prosperity and security #ruleoflaw.
Yesterday marked #InternationalDayinSupportofVictimsofTorture. The UK stands together with others to prevent torture and tackle impunity. We are proud to work with @APTGeneva to support torture prevention.
🚨 It’s launch day! We just released our new Torture Prevention Visualisation Tool — showing 40 years of legal progress across the world. See the progress. Use the data. 🔗apt.ch/mapping-tortur…
Today I visited the ‘Traces of Belsen’ exhibition at the @wienerlibrary, which marks 80 years since Bergen-Belsen’s liberation. The stories it tells are powerful reminders of the necessity of keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive.
Appalling attacks in Sudan’s Kordofan region since the weekend, with estimates of over 450 killed, among them many children and pregnant women. I echo @UNHumanRights Chief @volker_turk’s calls for urgent de-escalation and protection of civilians. This violence must end now.
Come on board!
As the latest session of the Human Rights Council draws to a close, we have been reminding partners of our candidacy to rejoin the Council from 2026-2028 in the shape of a 🏴 shortbread-filled 🇬🇧 bus, which has been doing the rounds of Geneva… come on board!

In the past decade, at least 15 countries have decriminalised consensual same-sex relationships 🏳️🌈 The UK uses its diplomatic network to promote inclusive laws and policies that uphold universal human rights for all 🌏 #EqualSafeFree #Pride #PrideInLondon
With @IBAHRI, we have hosted a @WiltonPark event on the pursuit of criminal justice for 🇺🇦. Together with Ukraine we have identified and committed to concrete steps to help deliver accountability for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. #StandWithUkraine

A historic moment in the pursuit of justice and accountability for Ukraine. Since 2022 @Keir_Starmer and I have supported the idea for a Special Tribunal to prosecute those responsible for Russia’s war of aggression. This Agreement takes us a step closer to bringing it to life.
Today, together with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, @alain_berset, we signed the Agreement on the Establishment of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine. Today’s Agreement and this Tribunal give us a real chance to ensure justice for…
80 years ago, the UK was the only country to send an all-female delegation to sign the @UN Charter. Women in diplomacy have played a huge role in driving forward progress on peace, security and human rights.
I welcome Ukraine’s work, as current chair of the International Alliance on Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict, to draw global attention to the issue of sexual violence in conflict. Justice for survivors is non-negotiable. #OneVoiceAgainstCRSV #UA_PSVI_LEADERSHIP
Today, we remember those affected by conflict-related sexual violence. From Sudan to Ukraine, tackling this crime is a matter of international peace and security. I will continue to drive international action to support survivors, bring perpetrators to justice and end impunity.
The UK endorses the @MediaFreedomC support for the report of UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression in the UN Human Rights Council, on the importance of freedom of expression, the free flow of information, and role of the media in elections. #defendmediafreedom
