Today the emerging crisis of medical unemployment was highlighted to @ScotGovFM during @kayeadams Morning show This scandal will see doctors out of work in an understaffed system where patients can find it harder to get appointments A🧵 on how & why @BMAScotland are tackling it
Data continues to show overcrowding in UK EDs. Despite 100s of associated deaths each week still not seeing evidence it’s up there as a priority across all 4 nations. Unambitious plans have failed. Will the new 10 year plan show more commitment to actually get to grips with it?

This is not sustainable @wesstreeting. It’s also a gross waste of taxpayers money to be training people in the UK for them to have no job. So much for doubling medical student numbers - our brightest 16-18 year olds know to look at a graph like 👇and look elsewhere
Reports from @FT show 6k+ applicants for just 1700 training posts last year. Doctors are being left in limbo, without posts and unable to progress in their career. In an understaffed NHS this is a scandal. Government must urgently increase training posts. ft.com/content/ddb51e…

"If the Scottish Government is serious about creating a more efficient and patient-centred healthcare system, then delayed discharges must be reduced. The ageing of our population is a triumph - lack of “social care” risks turning that triumph into a disaster." @RCPEdin

“The increase in service-based “Locally Employed Doctor” posts is a matter for serious concern, not celebration. The increase is produced by a training gap - a huge and growing mismatch between the numbers of graduates and the number of structured training posts available.”
