My op-ed for @TorontoStar: when it comes to encampments, @fordnation is looking south of the border when he should be looking west. Ontario is importing failed American policies to punish homelessness, while Manitoba is doing what works: housing people. thestar.com/opinion/contri…
NEW RESEARCH: Ontario provincial jails had 7,455 releases in 2023-2024 of people with no fixed address, meaning they had no housing. CBC News article: cbc.ca/news/canada/to… (1/2)
Emergency infrastructure like shelters shouldn"t be delayed while we continue to exist in a housing and homelessness crisis. I'm glad that Council agrees: homeless people are constituents, and the provision of safe, decent shelter isn't political, and it must be prioritized.
And the shelter item as amended CARRIES 22-3. All six sites will go forward.
Let's be practical: we need purpose-built, right-sized shelters in our city if we want to address the homelessness crisis. Thanks @gregbradyx for talking with me about building the new shelters that Toronto needs.
This is an example of a shelter that Baber wants you to be scared of. It is a space for our neighbours to sleep, eat, and transition into permanent housing. 15,000+ are homeless across Toronto. We need all hands on deck to tackle this crisis. Sign here: progresstoronto.ca/petition-tackl…
Tomorrow, Toronto City Council will vote on zoning for 6 new shelters. All 6 are in residential neighbourhoods, near schools/daycares. All 6 plus the next 18 will be handing out needles. Tomorrow, call your councillor's office. See if they want your vote. toronto.ca/city-governmen…
Transit riders win more reliable and fast transit! City Council just voted 20-3 to approve dedicated transit lanes on Dufferin and Bathurst south of Bloor Street, showing overwhelming support for better transit. Read our full press release here: ttcriders.ca/transit_riders…
I know literacy is declining, but this is a service delivering harm reduction supplies so that we can reduce HIV/AIDS, Hep B/C, and other blood-borne illnesses, infections, and injuries that are both an individual and public health risk. People buy their own drugs.
So the uber for drugs thing is making its way around the internet. And I thought surely this is photoshop. NOPE. Here is my own screencap from their website. Your tax dollars at work. (As a reminder, this is the same health centre where a mother of two was tragically murdered by…
NEW: Since 4 Toronto safe consumption sites were forced to close, the number of overdoses per week at Metropolitan United Church has gone from 1 to as many as 6. "It's just carnage all the time. I feel like I’m staring at a bad motor vehicle accident.’ torontotoday.ca/local/health/c…
NGL, a highlight of my year is being able to join the iconic Stripper News to talk about criminalizing homelessness and people who use drugs, and the closure of safe consumption sites in Ontario. You can watch the full 18-minute episode on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=g8UYWV…
Supervised consumption sites provided an irreplaceable service that not only saved 21,979 lives, it also changed them through non-judgmental services. Without them, people are using and dying in public, reusing needles — it's a public health disaster. thestar.com/news/gta/ontar…
Toured the new shelter that's in the news for making a certain demo of neighbours mad. Unsurprisingly, it's awesome. I'm gonna show you why.
Welcome to the new St. Felix Centre on Adelaide Street for homeless people. As a Toronto ER doctor I believe in the work you do to help our community. We need more of you. @Diana_C_McNally @MayorOliviaChow @cathyacrowe @BravoDavenport @PaulaFletcher @CllrJamaalMyers @gordperks…
Public infrastructure like bike lanes and shelters save lives and improve safety. And despite today's protest from anti-transit, anti-shelter proponents — just 30 of them — they did not stop six new shelter sites from moving forward this afternoon. Good. thestar.com/news/gta/prote…
