Don't call them "legislators". The primary function of an elected assembly or parliament is not to pass laws, conduct debates, hold committee hearings or even represent public opinion. It is to act as a check on executive power. youtube.com/watch?v=95VDaf…
Few things are as flattering as praise from thoughtful Anglophiles. They see us as we are, with all our crimes broad-blown, as flush as May; and they like us anyway. Few Anglophiles are as thoughtful as @jaynordlinger. jaynordlinger.com/p/london-journ…
Our love affair with "experts" has condemned us to rule by quangos. Now it is seriously being proposed that a quango would nominate one of our two legislative chambers. youtube.com/watch?v=Vt6-vW…
The LibDems don't just want to scrap the hereditary peers (the only elected element in the Lords). They want appointments to be vetted by a committee of grandees: the very definition of oligarchy. youtube.com/watch?v=Vt6-vW…
A reminder of why education matters. Communism is indeed intuitive. The reason we now live past the age of 30 and have moved on from cannibalism and human sacrifice is that we teach truths that don't come naturally. Or at least, we used to.
"Of course it's been tried - and we all lived in caves!" isn't quite the win he thinks it is.
Do Americans still believe in federalism, states' rights and limits on executive power? Does either side care about these things when it is in office? Watch my full discussion with @rogerrream on Brexit, conservatism and the US at 250 here: youtube.com/watch?v=95VDaf…
Things that are rationed by the state, such as housing and education, become more expensive. Things that are provided by the market - cars, TVs, phones, holidays etc - become cheaper.
In September I turn 30. The same age as my dad when I was born. It’s made me think about the drop in living standards in one generation. On a fireman’s salary he could afford a 4 bed semi in a leafy part of Manchester. He had two kids (5 and new born), now almost completely…
Why the hell were they still marking a police killing five years ago in a distant country - a country whose own sports players had long since stopped making the gesture?

Labour knows it will lose the next election; the EU knows it, too. So the two sides are locking in Britain's Helot status, making their treaties "Farage-proof". telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/1…
Labour inherited a recovering economy. One year later: it’s bleeding out. Starmer and Reeves crashed the car with their budget but haven’t learned the lesson: You can’t tax your way to growth. Britain can’t afford any more high taxes. We need to cut spending. Now.
All this is untrue. Channel crossings are at a record high. Unemployment is rising. The economy is shrinking.
This is what our work on the international stage is all about — delivering for British people. Tackling migration. Creating jobs. Growing our economy.
When Ukraine needed aid, Trump cut it off. Now, just as Zelensky's government looks to be past the point of recovery, he restores it. Odd. washingtonexaminer.com/magazine-colum…
Labour is no longer a party for workers. Now, it is a party for perkers (officials whose income comes from the state), shirkers (claimants who will vote against any reform of benefits) and burqas (Islamists who combine religious extremism with resentful anti-colonialism).
The Times’s weekend read on ‘persistent knobheadery’, Cabinet warnings over a soft-left pivot and swingball at Chequers: * Keir Starmer told his Cabinet they were the most working class in history and had an unique opportunity to shape lives of those less fortunate than them *…
I always liked Ed Feulner, a big man in every sense. He had @Heritage fly a Union flag in honour of Brexit. Heritage had 9 staff when Ed got going in 1973. Now it has 900 staff, 500,000 members and an annual budget of over $100 million. Si monumentum requiris, circumspice. 🇬🇧🇺🇸
The Heritage Foundation released the following statement today from Heritage President Dr. Kevin Roberts and Board of Trustees Chairman Barb Van Andel-Gaby, lauding the legacy and mourning the loss of Heritage Founder Edwin J. Feulner: It is with great sorrow that we announce…
