Aldous Huxley, author of the novel "Brave New World" and Visiting Professor at Cal, 1962-63, was born July 26, 1894. At Berkeley, Huxley gave his famous "The Ultimate Revolution" lecture, predicting a near future of entire societies living happily brainwashed into subservience.
Here is a link to Aldous Huxley's full "The Ultimate Revolution" lecture, given at Cal on March 20, 1962, in which he discussed his concern that the "fantasy" of the world he created in "Brave New World" would become reality: youtube.com/watch?v=2WaUkZ…
George Pardee, Class of 1879, was born July 25, 1857. He was Mayor of Oakland, Assembly Speaker, and Governor of California 1903-1907. As governor, his handling of the 1906 earthquake was widely praised. He also worked to establish the University Farm in Davisville, now UC Davis.
George Pardee turned down Theodore Roosevelt's offer of the VP spot on his 1904 ticket. Pardee's opposition to Southern Pacific Railroad's monopoly power split the California GOP & he was denied renomination as governor. He later helped found the Port of Oakland & East Bay MUD.

Chang-Lin Tien, beloved @UCBerkeley Chancellor (1990-1997) was born July 24, 1935. An immigrant from China, Tien earned a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Princeton and became a Cal professor in 1959. He was the first Asian American to lead a major American university.
Chancellor Tien's enthusiasm for Cal & its students was legendary. He ran onto the field with the football team, wore his Cal cap around campus & passed out cookies in the library during finals week, exhorting, "STUDENTS! STUDY HARD! GO BEARS!" (Thx to @JennieCal for the photo!)
“It is now my responsibility to uphold the American dream for everyone.” Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien, born #OTD in 1935: 🏛️ Was the 1st Asian American to head a top U.S. research university 🏅 Earned Cal’s Distinguished Teaching Award at age 26 💙 Was a champion of diversity

James Hopper, Class of 1900, was born July 23, 1876. A noted writer of novels and short stories, he was also a reporter and provided dramatic coverage of the 1906 SF earthquake. Hopper played quarterback for Cal's great 1899 team and was Cal's head coach in 1904, going 6-1-1.
